I saw a documentary on sleep paralysis and people describe a very similar silhouette causing them night terrors. In addition many years ago a friend told me he saw this strange figure in a tv while he was monitoring the channels manually for just a fragment of a second. Although kid stories are not very credible, the guy had no clue so if he made it up it must be a coincidence.

I have no clue but I've told my story on this board ever since I saw the Hat Man in '07. I saw it in my bedroom around 1am after a night of ghost hunting in a cemetery, which I did a lot of the time with friends. I won't go through the entire story again (I really need to just type up a copy and save it for once) but at the time that I saw it, I knew about shadow beings already. It wasn't until a year later while listening to Coast 2 Coast AM that I found out about the existence of a unique shadow being named the Hat Man. When a caller described it and said it had been seen around the world, I got fucking chills. I mean...I saw this fucking thing clear as day in my room and a year later I find out that other people have seen it and it has been described exactly as I saw it the year prior.

Fuck dude, I saw this guy in my dreams when I was about 15. He kept me up for a full week because he would show up, "staring" at me from the doorway. I would wake up and sit bolt upright and stare at the door for hours. I started getting no sleep. On the last day of the week, instead of being in the doorway, he was standing above me in my dream, next to my bed, breathing hard, and when he leaned down towards me, I woke up with sleep paralysis. I don't care what science says, that shit was messed up and I always believed it was demonic.

I think it's worth noting that the appearance of similar entities in Sleep Paralysis episodes permeate all cultures, and are usually culturally specific. The notion of the creepy man in the black hat has a place in the western cultural consciousness, for example in Poltergeist 2, or Chucky's fear of the Quaker Oats guy in Rugrats (which mirrors an IRL fear that my peers had as children).
It's the simple, effective imagery of a quaker like figure that suggests authority and a vague sort of ominous oppression that is tailor made to SP episodes. I don't think this is some full-fledged entity, just a culturally specific fear meme that is easily co-opted by our subconsciousness.

I'll add my 2 cents. I've had various sleep paralysis and even dreams involving, or centering around "shadow people". The only time I had a dream with a "hat man" was when I was very young, maybe 3, and he was almost like a guide. We were running through a long corridor, and there were cartoonish vampires and winged snakes popping out of doors and floorboards in this hallway, but we barely made it to the door at the end of the corridor with these burlap bags of chalk, or flower or something.
He wasn't a shadow, but he was a hat man for sure.
When it comes to shadows I've seen a hooded woman in a black cloak and red lining, a "watcher" who only observed me from the formlessness of door shadows, and one that I sensed as a very strong, but oppressive presence that whispered into my ear directly that he/it was going to "feed off my terror".
I used to have problems with the terror feeder, but one night when the (as one anon aptly put it) heavy static atmosphere was starting to happen I yelled "Go away!" into the dark, and it hasn't been back since to my knowledge.
I know I don't have the answers, but there is something to the notion of hat men, and there are more than one out there that might get confused with others.

I don't know much about this stuff, but I can usually break free from sleep paralysis.
It rarely gets me like it used to, mainly because I'm really annoyed when it happens, and immediately retaliate in anger at it.
One time, I fell asleep on my stomach and it tried the same bullshit.
I tried lucid dreaming but it was mostly me just squirming around not really able to lift myself off the bed. My arms felt too weak and I felt like I was really drunk and clumsy but still sober in the head.
I guess it took pity on me, and cradled me up from the sofa and decided to take me on a ride or something.
He put me in like a theme park car, and took me into this tunnel, that looked like organs of some sort leading up to a beating center. From one angle it looked like a heart with it's different muscles, but as we went around it, it showed something else. I can't remember.
He laid me back in bed and I woke up.

I've told my story here before that I lived in a bungalow on the far south side of Chicago. my bedroom window was at least eight feet off the ground and quite nearly every night I would see a tall dark man in a wide brimmed hat. It got to the point where my father stayed up and patrolled the backyard to make sure it wasn't some creep.
Thirty years later my little sister revealed that she saw the same man in her bedroom, in a different house, when she was five or six, but was too scared to tell anyone.
