Yeah, spirits exist. A lot of the supposed "ghost" stories are a result of hallucinations, and they aren't nearly as common as some would have you believe, but yep.

OP you see a long time ago the Gods looked down from their ethereal thrones and saw that man wasn't learning and growing like they had hoped. This was because at the time all dimensions were available to view to the average entity. Everybody perceived all there was to be seen--past, present, future, shadow creatures, demons and angels alike. All of it.
While this sounds awesome, it wasn't quite conducive to growth. So they enacted a veil between the dimensions to kickstart a will to seek out the unknown and penetrate the mystery.
Those who are beginning to penetrate the veil see things others do not. Simple as that. Some are not ready for this and fall prey to the attacks of certain invisible entities. We call this schizophrenia. It is a hyper lucidity brought onto people who have not had the proper guiding...thus they go crazy most of the time.

Evidence is so easy to fake that it's nearly impossible to prove.
Pretty much if you've had extensive first hand and shared experiences, you'll know it's real, but you can't prove it to others.
Growing up there were instances where an entire room full of people shared the same experience of voices, doors opening and closing, footsteps, etc. My sister and I saw the same entities twice, once separate, another time when we were together, and then there's the poltergeist who on rare occasion would move objects and physically interact. It gets to a point where you know you aren't imagining, and I was the sort of person who tried to come up with rational explanations to cope with the spooky shit I couldn't do anything about. Some things were beyond rational explanation.
