This still applies to the country, even if the moon landing was faked, there has been plenty of good that came out of it and lots of progress in the realm of space throughout the world. So they did what anyone does at work when their deadline is due and they have finished yet. They faked it. And then when they had some breathing room, they went up for realsies.
