I keep hearing Alien (1979), is as good as The Thing; but I have yet to watch it, so consider that a tentative recommendation at best.
For a not-necessarily-horrific but nonetheless emotively harrowing avant-garde thriller; I whole-heartedly recommend Santa Sangre (1989). I reckon it fits the requirements of: thrills, kills and psychological-head-fuckery present in all truly classic horror films (if you do follow-up on this recommendation I must insist that you first watch El Topo (1970) & The Holy Mountain (1973) -- both from the same director -- before Santa Sangre).
