Let's talk about quality films dealing with /x/-related content. Recommend, discuss, criticize, whatever.

Pic related are some /x/-related films I enjoyed. The Japanese one on the bottom is Noroi: The Curse.
>>
Sinister wasn't bad up until the end, which is a recurring problem in the genre. I don't know why it's so hard for writers to finish a story right. I'm looking at you, Stephen King

KANNNNAAAAA!!!

Also is coherence any good?

Coherence was good. Not really much horror like the other ones there, but it was a bit freaky. I'd recommend giving it a watch.

It's really a top-notch horror comedy. That ending was pure gold.
>>
>>17749034
Can you please elaborate on your statment? i thought it was great, something diffrent and actually historically accurate (scene with levitating witch after smearing herself with baby's body)
>>
>>17749097
I was way more scared by it then "normal" horror movies. Aatmosphere was great, on pair with soundtrack and scenography.
>>
>>17749117
You're suggesting that witch levitation and baby-smearing is historically accurate? The 17th century was a WILD RIDE.
>>
>>17749123
You shouldn't be afraid to laugh, anon.
>>
>>17749137
why should i laugh? The movie was creepy as fuck, especially with those fuckin' twins
>>

well i may have put it wrong, but it was believed that smearing yourself with a unbaptized baby or child fat would make you levitate.

Not really. It Follows really creeped me the fuck out. It's just that the atmospheric part of The Witch wasn't really made to 'click' with most people. It just came out as over the top drama.

An /x/-related movie I highly recommend is Possession (1981). If you're watching it for the first time, don't look at any trailers or anything, just go in cold.

Each of the scenes I mentioned could have been executed in a very eerie manner by a competent director. However, they came off as comical because Robert Eggers couldn't decide whether he wanted to do a horror movie, a period drama, or an art film. Most "truly terrifying" scenes come off as comical if you're unable to preserve tone and tension; when you're genre-jumping every scene, it's constantly breaking tension. It seems to me that Eggers was more concerned with folklore and historical accuracy for its own sake than incorporating it into the plot in any meaningful, interesting, or frightening fashion.
>>
>>17749632
Maybe his Nosferatu will be alright. Hopefully it will just be based on the Murnau film, since Vampire folklore is inconsistent and mostly retarded.
>>
>>17749796
It'll be interesting to see how it compares to Herzog's.

Beyond The Black Rainbow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWF0bBKhe6o

Not exactly scary, but definitely /x/-core if you pay attention. Paying attention may be troubling for you out there with a short attention span (you have to wait for it to get good as fuck), but it definitely worth it. Also, if you love art-house, this is your film.

The Holy Mountain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdXGhsAynGI

Once again, not exactly scary (per se, the feelings of uneasiness are quite impressive though), but deals with a lot of /x/-related themes throughout the picture, such as dimensional bending and finding metaphysical enlightenment. Again, a film great for art-house lovers.

Awesome film, and extremely believable until I recognized the actor from Safety Not Guaranteed. Mr. Peachfuzz scenes were the best.

On that note, did anyone see "They're Watching (2016)"? I feel like I'm the only one in love with how meta and smart this movie is, including the cheesy langoliers style ending effects. However, discussing this movie would only ruin the surprise.

Also, what's /x/ favourite recent slasher flick? I'm partial to The Collector, I wish it had gained the popularity of the undeserving Saw franchise.
>>
>>17751441

You know I really wish I did, but I think the only thing that comes close is Solaris.

There is, however, a short film by George Lucas (it was basically his first claim to fame, so don't panic, this is definitely pre-90's Lucas) called THX 1138 (and, before you ask, no this is not the feature length film [which was completely ripped off by Michael Bay with his work, The Island] THX 1138, and yes, this is where THX came from because of the short film's emphasis on sound). While it may be hard to relate this piece to /x/, (it's a little more sci-fi than paranormal), there are some certain aspects of it that are /x/, such as mind-control via transmitted frequencies. Fortunately enough, this gem is readily available on the Youtube. Also, I feel that this is one of the only films (along with Beyond the Black Rainbow) that produces the same feelings associated with Boards of Canada.

House of Wax is somewhere in the middle, but I agree. There should be at least 4 or 5 of his other films on that list. Some even better than house of Wax.

I am not particularly sure if I'd say Cushing was more important to horror than Boris Karloff or Lon Chaney Sr. To me he's a great actor who's wonderful the horror films he's in, but he's always the second fiddle. Never really the monster or the main interest in the film. Definetely not on the same level as a Vincent Price. Kind of odd he's the main focus in your picture. Love him though.

There's going to be a new Nosferatu? That sounds awful. Today's horror films rely too much on jumpscares and human backstory instead of the gothic scenery and the other worldly surreal kind of feeling you get when watching films like Nosferatu and Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. I just don't it being about a bunch of teens visit this castle and Count Orlok just kills them off one by one in a generic slasher kind of way.

You didn't see movies like TCM back in 1974. You may say it's probably one of the most original and pure horror movies out there. It doesn't follow a specific formular and it had such a frightening grainy sense of isolation and realism. Truly one of the few horror films that I legit find scary. Nothing like it existed at the time. You're probably just too ignorant to understand. I don't mean that as an insult. It's a very important film and deserves the praise it gets.

This is literally the only film after watching on Netflix repeatedly (which I tend to do a lot of with their best ones) that I actually purchased after they stopped streaming it. I only have about 25 DVDs to my name, so that's saying something.

This film had it all; visuals, soundtrack, originality... and something so magical about it that it even induced me to create artwork inspired by the film (mostly through beadingas a medium).

I pray that Cosmatos directs something similar again, or even anything new at this point!

I get that it's totally different and should be viewed from a different scope then the book, but reading it first ruined the movie for me. The guy who played West did a killer performance though. The source material is always better. The movie is wonderful as its own thing. Haven't seen the sequels and I probably never will. Already too many horror movies I haven't watched and need to. Feel like a pleb even though I've seen so many greats. Hell, I have never fully watched Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, but I still consider myself to be more of a true hardcore fan of horror because I've sat down and watched Nosferatu, Dr. Caligari, Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, The original Fly, House of Wax, and literally a ton of others. Most of these films have never been watched by the average horror fan nowadays. I just don't give a shit about Jaws and Child's Play and all the Generic slashers that was shat out all throughout the 80's.

I'm worried Wicker Man will be boring. Doesn't seem very horror, and the trailer did not help.

Also worried about The Fly because it doesn't star Vincent Price. Though I'm sure the effects are great.

The ones I'm looking forward to the most are Suspiria and House. Something about 70's foreign horror films that seem very creative. We're they ever dubbed in English or am I stuck with watching it subbed. I've noticed watching a horror film in which I have to look at the words at the bottom of the screen constantly really ruin my suspension I disbelief. Suspiria may be in English. Not really sure. I know it's an Italian film, so it may be dubbed considering all Italian films are like that. There aren't any dialogue in their films and they usually put in dialogue later

>>
>>17758025
The Wicker Man is every bit as horror as the others, it just unravels as a mystery. I like the way it unfolds slowly. Some might find it boring but I don't.

The Fly is The Fly - David Cronenberg style. If you like him, you'll love his take on the classic. It's much more visceral than the original as you'd expect.

An American Werewolf in London is simply the most unique spin on the werewolf sub genre as I've ever seen.

The Thing is pure excellence the whole way through. The cast, the acting, the paranoia, the legendary special effects, everything.

House is a ride. It's not one I watch all the time but to say it's unique is an understatement. It's like Japanese Evil Dead 2 cranked up to 11.

As for Suspiria all I have to say is this: I went into it with extremely high expectations and it still blew me away. Simple as that, I heard it was amazing, figured it would be, watched it, and it immediately became a personal favorite. And yes it is in English. No subtitles required.

I really hope you enjoy most of these if not all of them.

Not every lovecraft story had to do with cosmic horrors and crazy space incomprehensible forbidden knowledge.
If you read his early stuff (IE rats in the walls) You'll see he focused more on atmospheric horror and the effects that an incredibly vague and sometimes completely unseen antagonist had on the sanity of the protagonists.
This is exactly what The Witch is about.

You're confusing 'Lovecraftian' with 'Gothic' horror, you Redditor cunt. The stories Lovecraft wrote which weren't "cosmic horrors and crazy space incomprehensible forbidden knowledge" were either attempts to copy Poe or Lord Dunsany's style. You imbeciles can pretend the VVVVitch is a horror movie all you want, but when you start calling it Lovecraftian, you've lost your fucking minds.
>>
>>17759935

You're fucking stupid, one of the core concepts of lovecraftian horror is that the main antagonist is incredibly vague and affects the protagonists on a psychological level.

>"Lovecraftian horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that emphasizes the horror of the unknown (and in some cases, unknowable) more than gore or other elements of shock, though these may still be present."

Everything about the horror of The Witch screams lovecraftian influences.
