According to the holographic principle, nothing is happening in the black hole. Everything happens on the horizon of the universe and what we experience inside that universe is only a representation of information laying in a boundary we can never reach.
In order words, we aren't densely packed individuals. We're scattered information across a gigantic encircling plane that holds all the information that makes us, us. The actual things that make us, us... could be spaced apart farther than the distance of the known universe.
It's a neat idea that attempted to explain the information paradox back in the day.
