if that's the case, it would demonstrate that the aliens don't know shit about ecology. Eating a organism of a higher trophic level means investing very much energy into feeding them first.
For every level you need approximately 10times of the food.
Let's say an alien eats 1kg human flesh. The human needs to eat 10kg meat (cow etc.) to gain 1kg of weight. The cow needs 100kg plants and so on.
