Are pentagrams, and the upside down cross even actual demonic symbols? I always thought that they were only thought of as that by the general public because of them being used in Hollywood movies, with the upside down cross still being a symbol used by Christians and the pentagram being a protection symbol against demons.

The Pentagram and Pentacle have many different meanings, but protection is one of them. Rather, think of the point up meaning "Sending energy away." and the point down meaning "Taking energy in."
