Vastly depends on what content there is for it. So it's not so much the virtual reality technology that has to improve right now, but the available applications for it. Society will dictate such a virtual environment. Right now it's basically just for games, but I could see many other fields for VR to really make an impact: For example, I could see it getting big in education, imagine being able to just sit into every lecture at let's say Harvard in VR and get free or very cheap education worldwide.
Unless of course you're talking about the far feature, where all our senses are covered in VR. Then we all stay at home while only robots and A.I. still have to work, and fuck our 3d waifus in huge virtual orgies all day long, every day.
Then again when all our senses are covered in VR via neuroimplants and such, we will begin to merge with A.I. making us vastly more intelligent, maybe our consciousness connected to each other via internet, making us something we'd today look up to as gods.

- Things like fishing and golf and in fact most sports and outdoor recreational activities will start to go obsolete.
- Less people going outside and demolishing/manipulating natural areas of the environment for entertainment purposes means that while everyone is having their adventures in their own homes, nature is thriving elsewhere, helping the environment.
- Advertisements begin to destroy any sense of immersion in VR spaces. That walk through the woods? Expect it to get interrupted so you have to watch a 20-second commercial for tampons.
- The increased use of VR will result in corporations and companies abusing their consumers (as they always have and always will). VR will go from a one-time purchase to requiring constant usage fees. Electrical bills will skyrocket.

here's what i think.
People will get so caught up in these virtual realities, favoring them over the real world, causing people to become more isolated from each other than they already are. Poor people that can't afford virtual reality will end up being the ones that are left. Everything will either be totally disgusting due to people not having jobs because they have a virtual life, or we will have robots that clean everything up. Cities will turn into the territory of gangs, drug dealers, and other criminals. And as the next generations come, less and less of them will like being in the real world. Soon the earth is gonna get fucked up and there we have it, Wall-E happens
You know how in Game of Thrones...or any movie where someone in confronted with the ability to see a reality, that isn't really real, the person showing them the reality is always warning about them getting caught up in it and deciding to stay in the fake place instead of going back to reality?
