Let's talk about Antarctica.
What interesting mysteries are there about the place? What secrets do you think might be there?
>>
>>17688829
Hopefully cool things like pyramids, and remnants of a past great civilization. Anatomically modern humans have been present for some 200,000 years; who knows what kinds of cool things are buried which we do not know about.

Heard there was this thread and thought I'd remind you that the Earth is flat and maps are a lie
>>
>>17688895
I just checked and it looks like it started freezing around 23 million years ago when the straight formed between it and south america, separating it from the continent. By 15 million years ago it was completely frozen.

It's so interesting to think how it would have changed the political landscape if it was still temperate. Imagine a whole new area to colonize, and a bit more space to expand a bit longer.
>>
the most interesting mystery to me is why people didnt invade it to spelunk for minerals and other goodies when it was discovered but that might have something to do with it being a frozen shithole on the ass end of the world

maybe if the climate change finishes kicking in and thawing it out people can go fuck it up then
>>
>>17690156
how come the flight from cape town to sydney is so short though? shouldnt it be like ten times longer than london to new york?

>>
Wildest possibility could be ruins from a prehuman intelligent race. It was temperate som 23-24 million years ago. Deinonychus was around about 100 million years ago and that has a lot of the basic body structure needed to start a civilization on. It took only about 60 million years for mice to turn into us, so if there has ever been a non-human civilization here any remaining evidence will be buried in the ice there.
>>
>>17689055
Well said, sir.
>>
>>17690156
If Antarctica was actually big enough to surround the entire world, people would have noticed. You can't just say "The government conspiracy is hiding it", you can't guard a continent big enough to surround the world.

USA can't even guard its Mexican boder.

Been frozen over for 150 million years
Before it got cold it was a jungle, so there might be interesting things below the 1.5 miles of ice, if there are any caves, that much ice tends to pulverize anything below it
I read somewhere that if you raised the global temperature to a constant 90 degrees with no day/night cycles and no seasons it would take Antarctica anywhere from 1 to 10 million years to completely melt, raising the worldwide sea levels by about 200 feet
Before South America broke away from Antarctica the Earth had a pretty constant global temperature, jungle from pole to pole, when the breakaway occurred it allowed Antarctic waters to circulate as they due now, and this helped to change the global temperature

What's under all that ice, probably sand, gravel and not much else

Sometimes the taxidermist self-flagellates, but some accidentally womanly ruffian always hosts a haunch from a toothpick! The amorously unsightly cigar tries to seduce the onlooker. A self-actualized cup daydreams, and an ungodly lunatic trembles; however, some dissident derives perverse satisfaction from some amour-propre living with some looking glass. A dissident takes a peek at a rhetorical fetishist, and a hand barely laughs and drinks all night with a cup.

Meanwhile, the Smithsonian (kissing cousins with the Royal Geographical Society) is busy hauling dinosaur bones out.

Nothing to see here folks! Move along.

I think there's probably a Nazi base somewhere in Antarctica, or under it. deep under it. Agartha was supposedly accessible by submarine. You can find the maps online- I've no clue if they're legit or not, but one good thing to wonder about is:

Why was there an underground railroad for nazi officials through south America to Tierra Del Fuego after WW2, you might ask?

Actually, don't ask that. At least, not too loudly.

Antarctica is fascinating. OP, if you want a good read, with accurate accounts from the past 300 years up to 1985, try Readers Digest : Antarctica. There are still some volumes out there for sale. It's fucking awesome and I have re-read my beautiful 22 year old volume many times.

Also, The Worst Journey In the World, by Apsley Cherry Gerrard. Couldn't put it down.

As for the secrets buried within it? By the time it's ice melts, humanity, catastrophically wrapped in it's scuba gear, will wish that it hadn't.

Nice topic thread OP.

And that fuckers name is Captain Cook
>1700's british explorer
>Captain of the royal navy
>discovered eastern australia, made contact with hawaiian islands, first to circumnavigate new zealand
>Be him, on second voyage
>destination: arctic circle
Description from 1800's Scientific AmericaN
>"In 1774 Captain Cook sailed down into the unknown Antarctic regions, and after terrible harships reached a spot where he saw a snow-whit brightness in the clouds to the south, and he knew he was near the ice field."
>"Four hours later he was stopped by a great ice barrier in latitude 71° south where the mountains of ice, rising one above the other, tier upon tier, into the distance, were lost in the clouds of the polar sky."
>"The desolate grandeur of that icy coast appalled the great navigator, and, seeing no possibility of pushing to the pole over those impassable mountains, he contented himself with having gone further than any one had ever been before, and, he thought, as far as any man could go."
It took Captain Cook, captain of the Queen's own navy, 3 years to sail "around" the globe. This does not make sense on a ball, but it makes perfect sense if on a flat plane earth.
Until the international Antarctic treaty is abolished, no non-establishment figure or organization can verify with their own senses how long it takes to traverse the entire coast of Antarctica. That's why the military and the powers that are want you to not explore down there. They are afraid you will discover this.

The Earth is Flat.

Here is the path Captain Cook took according to the longitude and latitudes found in his day journal. First on a globe earth map then a flat earth map. It makes complete sense on the flat earth.

>>
>>17701204
Know much about sailing, mate? Magellan circumnavigated the world in 1519 using a sail ship, we are told. His voyage was 42,000 miles and it took him 3 years (arriving in 1522).

Captain Cook, captain of the Queen's royal navy and explorer, startd his voyage to the arctic in July of 1768, nearly 250 years after Magellan's claimed circumnavigation, and returned in July of 1771, a full 3 YEARS later. His goal was to go around antarctica. We are told that antarctica is 11,000 miles in circuference which is 1/4 the circumference of the globe earth yet it took Captain Cook 3 years also to do what he did.

250 years later, shipping technology equal or exceeding Magellan's, a voyage which according to the reported circumference of Antarctica (11,000 miles) should have take a fourth of the time as Magellan took instead an equal amount of time (3 years).

TOLD.

I love this theory. My older brother is planning his second solo circumnavigation on the southern equator and he didn't fall off the planet the fist time. I've sailed from australia all through asia and the pacific. To japan and vladivostok. My little bro just got back from Cape town south africa. Really hard to hide a flat earth. It would be an awesome event if it was true though. Really pointless to cover up,but awesome.

If you look at the map, anon, Captain Cook didn't just circumnavigate Antarctica. He crossed the entire world, not terribly unlike Magellan, except he travelled much further than Magellan, crossing the pacific twice, sailing from the North Atlantic to the South Atlantic and back again, doing large loops, and it all makes perfect sense on the globe model of the earth. He covered much more mileage than Magellan, but he was a little faster in doing it since he had a better ship and was a better navigator. Still, he was subject to the winds, to currents, to the doldrums, and so on.

As a matter of fact, since this is James Cook we're talking about, he kept a log of every day that he was on that ship, and every day is accounted for, and you can read it and it all makes perfect sense. Furthermore, he recorded navigational data every step of the way, latitude and longitude and so on, and the only way THAT makes any sense is if the earth is round. Cook's voyages prove the globe of the earth.

With modern technology you can have people on Antarctica, and in fact there are 1000 to 4000 people there (number changes depending on the season). I don't see a reason to colonize it at the moment but it's totally possible that one day it'll have a lot more people. It is, indeed, a whole landscape with ton of exploring to do, if you're prepared. Give it a century or two. Can't wait.

No one is expecting the thing or a xenomorph, but best case scenario would be the sighting of creatures found under the deep ocean, where light does not shine and survival is purely based under the cycle of vulcanic pipes.

Not more than flying anywhere else. There used to be passenger jets flying over Antarctica going from Australia to South America. There aren't any now, but only because there weren't enough passengers and the routes weren't profitable enough for the air lines.

You mean you rejected them like an autist would. Do you have any idea how slow old school sailboats are? Thats a rhetorical question by the way. I already know you dont. Winds dont always blow and that means you just sit there at the mercy of ocean currents until they start again. 3 years in a sailboat farting around exploring is reasonable. If he had made a dedicated effort to circumnavigate with no detours, then 3 years is too long but obviously he didnt.

It's a good environment to test deep space equipment for future travel to other worlds. NASA already does tests in extremely hostile environments as a substitute as to what they might encounter. Set up a simulated moon base or something in Antarctica with all the necessary equipment and not only are you gaining valuable training but you can also explore the continent as well.

There are a few scientific research stations, like the one at McMurdo sound, but there's also another at the exact South Pole which is on raisable stilts and has year-round resident scientist teams.

Aside from that there are probably hundreds of abandoned whaling stations, some memorial sites to dead explorers.

I think there are probably a few small military posts that aren't publicised, or some secret fuel depots. There might also be some secret drilling operations that are kept hush hush because of the whole "keep it pristine" legislation surrounding pretty much the entire continent.

I know we fuck a lot of stuff up as a race, but that whole piece of legislation feels quite odd, almost like the whole piece of uninhabited land is sacred and taboo. Pretty neat.

In terms of stuff smacking into the earth from space, like meteors and stuff. I bet Antarctica is covered in them. It's a huge continent, and we have very little in the way of geological records at all I bet.

Also, do you reckon the ice and snow would act as a bit of an impact cushion maybe? Maybe bigger meteors could hit there with less disastrous repercussions? I bet there's some nice hefty space rocks all stuck in the ice down there. Also the meteors wouldn't be weathered, and anything biological on them like bacteria might just preserved by layers of snow and ice on top.

Actually it wasn't from SG-1, it's from Raising pt.1, the Stargate Atlantis pilot.

Interesting fact about SG:A that ties it back into Antarctica. Originally in the last ep of season 7 of SG-1, Lost City, they would have actually found Atlantis and not just an outpost, buried under the ice. This was changed at almost the last minute because SyFy decided they didn't want Stargate Atlantis to run by it's self and ordered an 8th season of SG-1.

>His average speed was 15.3 knots (17.6 mph) and covering 28,646.55 miles.
>Longest distance covered in 24 hours: December 10, 545 miles at an average speed of 22.7 knots (26.1 mph).

So apparently this conspiracy both allows multiple sail races around the edge of the world, and must expend untold amounts of energy setting up an elaborate lie and paying/coercing people to lie for them or to be duped by a lie.

For what?

Or can anyone explain why they seem to think he only went 28k miles when the calculated circumference of a Flat Earth would make the trip closer to 91,000 miles (including the distance from France to the antarctic)?

The Polestar cannot be seen further than 20-25 degrees beyond the equator. In the Southern Hemisphere they use the Southern Cross to navigate. Made a map of that for the last thread.

Never got an answer to that one either.

>inside red line = no S. Cross
>outside green line = no Polestar
>in-between = Polestar for 0-6 months, Cross for 0-6 months (varies depending on latitude)

It's funny - there's one thing any Flat Earther would need to do to crash the Globe theory. And it's something ANYONE can do.

Just go outside at night and if you're further north than 30 deg N (which is all of Europe and most of N. America so I'm guessing 80-90% of us on /x/) - take a picture of the Southern Cross.

This is 100% impossible for a globe, but should be relatively easy for a Flat Earth. So who is out there doing this? Do you need a picture for identification?

If there are any Strayans in here, then same thing, but look for the Little Dipper.

Some guy said he did it. That doesn't make it true or false. I think he's lying. If you were as deep into conspiracy as I am you'd know that there are so many big lies that the public accepts. Like jon bene ramsey being katy perry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPpH-_k3PQU

Or here, the S. Cross might be hard to point out for people not used to seeing it. It's right in front of the Milky Way and blends. How about Magellanic Clouds? Very distinct and very impossible to see north of 21° N.

I can only hope at least some of the summer kids will go outside and try it themselves.

>Some guy

Along with the event producers, the support staff, and the news crews - there have been 70 completions of this path in that one race event.

And there are three other famous sail races with a large leg being circumnavigation of Antarctica.

Not to mention this man has done it nine times. Just for kicks.

http://www.oldsaltblog.com/2015/02/jon-sanders-sails-home-to-perth-after-ninth-circumnavigation/

I'm sure he would give you a telemetry record. Considering the time he went three times around the world is a world record, the nav logs were certainly kept.

Easy-peasy. He says circumnavigation proves the earth is a globe. Circumnavigation is not a globe exclusive property though. If the north pole is in the arctic circle then anyone traveling east or west is traveling around the pole and will go in a complete circle.

Basically, his failure is the same as many many globe earther's failures: This is possible on a globe thus the earth is a globe. That's just a basic elementary fallacy. That's like saying "If this animal is a sheep then it will be white. Since this animal is white it is a sheep."

The many MANY records of sailors circumnavigating Antarctica is less than a month would be impossible, unless you believe every record and capability about these boats - and nautical travel in general - is false and a lie.

That amateur sailors, racing events, and tourist expeditions ALL are either too stupid to notice the difference in distance between 24k miles and 90k miles, or they are ALL lying and in on the conspiracy.

Second, I gave you a task EASILY done by any person on a Flat Earth that is impossible on a globe.

>take a picture of the Polestar from anywhere south of 21° S latitude
>take a picture of the Magellenic clouds anywhere north of 21° N latitude.

Or here, this is fun. This man set up a 360 degree timelapse in Utah. Watch from :11 to :27. Watch it over and over again.

OK... so if the Earth is flat, how can there be a frozen mass in the middle of everything, and a frozen ring encircling us?

If the Earth is flat, then how can compasses work the same way for 500+ years?

If the Earth is flat, how do tidal movements work?

>OK... so if the Earth is flat, how can there be a frozen mass in the middle of everything, and a frozen ring encircling us?
Because this is what the sun looks like for each season. The middle and edge are on average further from the sun then the equator which gets passed twice a year.

>If the Earth is flat, then how can compasses work the same way for 500+ years?

This question makes me wonder why you think this wouldn't be the case. The north pole is in the center of the plane in the arctics. There is no south pole, magnetic or other wise.

>If the Earth is flat, how do tidal movements work?

The fact that I specifically can't answer that doesn't mean no one can.

But why is the north pole melting at an alarming rate if the sun isn't changing position?

Fair enough, I thought you were thinking that compasses just started acting this way recently

>>
>>17720453
First person I've seen acknowledge the analemma. Kudos to that. Do you also agree that in order to get the shape in pic related on a flat Earth - the sun must be moving closer and farther away from the surface as well?
>>
>>17720471
>But why is the north pole melting at an alarming rate if the sun isn't changing position?

I don't know. Greenhouse gasses seems plausible to me. I used to think it was Nibiru because I heard supposedly the other planets in the solar system are heating up too, pluto being the most heated up recently. But I don't know if that is even true and I don't believe in space anymore.

>>17720483
I don't know what the analemma is and i don't know the answer to your question.
>>
>>17720496
The analemma is an abstract figure-eight shape drawn by the sun over the year. It is a lovely astronomy project that absolutely anyone can do.

Grab a camera - some sort of light filter like polarized lens would be best but you do you, don't want anyone to think I'm fooling them. Even better is if you can get some sort of grid to appear over the pics.

Set it up in a stable, fixed position. Now every day at the same time for a year, take a picture of the sun from that fixed position. What you will find is that for each day of the year, the sun at noon or 3pm or whatever time you choose will be in a slightly different place.

If you do this for the whole year, then draw a line between all the points, it makes a lopsided figure eight. But the distortion of the eight will change depending on where you are on the map. For instance, pic related is the analemma from Antarctica.

I would ask that you try this out, then think on what could cause such an observation.

If we're on a globe orbiting the sun, this is caused by the Earth's orbit not being perfectly circular - as shown in pic related.

On a flat Earth, wouldn't this observation mean that the sun is moving toward and away from the pole axis, AND rising and falling in respect to the surface? And what causes this motion to appear distorted from place to place on the map?
>>
>>17720522
Sounds boring.

Oh, since everything from Antarctica is govt. shill, here are a few comparison analemmas observed from different spots on the map. Not sure of the pic related's location, but based on graphical descriptions of the distortions from this site, it looks to be near Tokyo's latitude.

But again, I am giving experiments that ANYONE can do, and I encourage you to do them. This isn't taking pictures from space. This is sitting in your backyard every day, taking a pic of the sun @ 5pm, then watching the sunset.

>>17720578
Yeah, you're right. Better go back to posting "shill" on the internet.
