It seems likely that if someone is immortal they were either born that way or they gained it somehow through an outside force. I don't think someone can become immortal by just practicing magic.

Do you think immortality would be good for humanity even? I mean we reproduce sexually in order to mix genes, if we were to become immortal reproduction would grind to a halt and some nasty new disease might come along and ruin our shit. This might be corrected by making it prohibitively expensive, but then you have a situation where the elites only would be able to afford it and being rich powerful and immortal would be a huge power grab for them. Yeah I think human life is too short, but from a non personal level I think that it would end up being a bad thing for humanity.
