Basically, two Mississippian fisherman were out at the local wharf one night when, out of nowhere, an egg-shaped spacecraft appeared and several grey figures appeared. Well, the reason humans have five fingers is basically, other mammals/fish etc. before us had multiple fingers, so this would be hard to judge just going on evolutionary biology of Earth only. However, I still think it would be advantageous to have multiple fingers, due to the fact that it allows for more manipulation of things. I still think most likely scenario is they were having their appearances changed in real time or they altered the men's memories.
