My idea is that 1 the dating is grossly wrong
or 2 the southern indians just had some weird religious fetish for spheres, so they made these weird balls, but then the civilization that made them died out, and the culture of making them died with them

Their existence would probably be tied to ruling figures or belief, a sphere is a solid feat of engineering. The discoverer guy chasing giant balls worldwide even considers the dismissiveness of academics unusual. So little attention is being paid to worldwide phenomena, a lack of attention to actualy historical artifacts - historically speaking is pretty telling.

Pre neo dating is really interesting. Suggested civilized history is pretty damn young and resistance to exploring alternative theories on ancient cultures could indicate reluctance to challenge standing ideas - not uncommon for science, medicine etc really.

is it possible they would just have a group of five dudes or more out cutting stones into balls. then after about a week they have more guys hull them back to where ever they want them to be cut down into building material
I've had my hand at sculpting, and i can say that picking up a cube of 150 lb stone isn't easy, but rolling a 150lb ball isn't to hard. once you get it going its almost to easy and gets hard to stop it
Just a theory though, i know how this sounds
but hey, think about it like this, if your already going to cut the rock down to carry/cart the stone to another area, why not cut it down to a ball and roll the whole thing if you can?
