I remember reading in a folklore book about this meditation thing where you pick an object that has value and then meditate with only that object in mind. It supposedly creates a neutral aura that can be influenced by things considered lucky by holding the two things together while meditating, i.e a four leaf clover, horshoe, etc. I think it can also be influenced for a protection aura by things for protection. I know you're not religious or whatever, but since a cross is usually believed to be a form of protection, that or even just a weapon would work as well, but be careful because using a weapon may put violence into the object's aura.

Angels are Warriors of God. Hollywood and Renaissance art came up with the whole guardian angel thing. They are also created not made, meaning no human angels exist.
They are Servants to God and NOT to be worshiped it is forbidden outright(though there is a taboo secretive sect in the Catholic Church that outright worships Angels going against the teachings...) and they feel insulted you believe them to be as great as Him. You can of course pray and ask they intercede to God on your behalf. As a serving soldier, I pray to St Michael to protect me in battle and from the servants of Satan and I try to emulate his image in everything I do in life by engaging in spiritual warfare against the devil adding my spirit willingly to the Heavenly Host(not recommended for weak willed people like addicts for example, you become a massive target for the legions of Hell), save the weak, help the poor, defend the faith from enemies within and outside the Church but for comfort in dark places(as in literal dark, not demonic) I would suggest a prayer to St Christopher or St Raphael as they are the saints of travellers.
Though I would suggest reading Saints and their stories and find which is drawing you to him or her.
Up until 10 years ago(when I was 23), I was a full blown Atheist(Mother was laxed Catholic, Dad was Agnostic) in the sands of central Iraq. I felt the presence of something ancient and divine fill me with courage at a time when I needed it most(Child suicide bomber, horrible story, Would rather forget). Anyway that feeling began my journey after speaking with the Chaplain and I realised the Garden of Eden was said to have been in Iraq between the two rivers and that can't be coincidence where I felt that presence. My faith grew stronger even taking pilgrimages to Rome,Bethlehem,Garden of Gethsemane,Patmos and Jerusalem and in return for faith, I got a family and a purpose.

there is a thing called Holy Guardian Angel that is held to be pretty important in western esoterica. Supposedly every person is assigned a guardian spirit at birth, an actual separate entity from you, that you can eventually come to contact consciously to attain what's called Knowledge and Conversation of the HGA. Google around a bit and you'll find a million method to contact such a being. One guy, I forget his name, but a modern internet age magician, young guy, opined that all you need to do is maintain a conscious attitude of willingness to be in communion with the HGA. He suggested that the only necessary practice to attain this is simply to mentally repeat "I consent to the Knowledge and Conversation of my HGA" throughout the day - kinda like simplified mantra yoga. I reckon this would work, depending on how much effort and willpower and belief you are able to invest in the invocation. I've used different methods with some success, although I'm yet to form a stable relationship with my HGA (I can't just call her [or rather him in my case, i think] to come whenever, which is supposedly the end goal - not that you'll be commanding her/him, she-he is a teacher and a guide, not a servant). If you're not into the whole occult thing, though, this might not be your cup of tea. Then again, there are many good guys you can call on to for protection, depending really on who appeals to you - Jesus, Tara, Durga, Ganesha, and loads of others.. my bias is obviously kinda eastern.
