Your neurons don't interpret information. They integrate them into an electrical signal, send those signals to the brain, and then your brain will interpret and process the info. Then it will fire another action potential to make the appropriate response.
Its not energy thats being passed, it is literally waves, pressure changes, temperature changes, light changes, etc. It takes energy to cause these changes but your sensory cells are picking up physical changes.
