pretty good game, don't know why the creator dismissed all the praise. He hasn't been noted for anything before or since. I can see why somebody who made that game would want to fade into obscurity though.

looking for good horror game that can be played in a car on a laptop (no physical mouse and no high end video card). Even a flash/browser game as long as it's good.

Just finished necronomicon game , it's a great game but if you don't like tactical card games and aren't in to Lovecraft you might not like it.

For desktop I recommend the DEAD SPACE series played in order. It plays on you psychologically with the clausterphobia and is a good mix of occult and aliens and is often plain distgusting and jump-scary, kind of like living in a horror movie. Small RPG type elements with upgrading equipment and crafting.

I actually thought for the "new" team silent, Homecoming had the best story line too. But they just had to go and fuck things up.
As for Downpour, it still had the shitty combat system and fucking repetitive monsters. The overall story was meh. It let most hardcore Silent Hill fans down... because American team silent doesn't listen to the fans anymore. And now Konami hates team Silent.

System Shock 2.
I always play it with a Jedi Knight of sorts character build: psi powers and lightsab...I mean Laser Rapier related skills.
I would love that one day someone would invent a psi amp (pic related) that, at least, can reduce neural/brainwave interference, thus allowing us to develop and manifest psionic skills easier and better in non-lab conditions (aka real world).

Amnesia is better because lack of "combat"
>>

System Shock 2
Eternal Darkness
Clock Tower
Alone In The Dark
Sweet Home
Penumbra and Amnesia
Cry of Fear
Eternal Darkness
Scratches

>>
>>17649387
Amnesia is worse because of lack of "combat".

Without the ability to fight back it literally boils down to:

>Hear spooky music
>Run and find nearest hiding spot til it stops
>Repeat until credits roll

It literally saps any suspense and tension from what would otherwise be an interesting and atmospheric game. There is a reason that survival horror games let you fight but make it difficult. Without it it becomes a walking simulator with irritating interruptions where you have to stare at the inside of a cupboard for a few minutes every so often.
>>
>>17649397
I'd agree in most cases, but Amnesia made it work. It gets old really fast but the first time I played Amnesia with no expectations, I was legitimately scared, partly because I was expecting weapons and because I had never played anything that felt the same.

NOTE: I also love horror games with combat, but the combat in Penumbra it literally made you stare at poorly animated dogs for 20 minutes before it felt worthwhile to go on. It took away the entire experience.

Homecoming just did some really unnecessary stuff like putting in Red Pyramid without any contexts or reason, but it's a SH title so we gotta do that. The bosses did have some really fucking cool designs, but it pushed the viability of combat too much for it. It felt like it was trying to be a Res Evil SH title and it fucked up on that hard. Part of what makes the original games so great is the shit mechanics when it comes to fighting because it makes you want to run rather than fight and use weapons as an absolute last resort. Outside of the original trilogy I like Origins a lot and Shattered Memories was interested because it tried some new stuff and focused on the psychological elements a lot more.

It really depends on what ending you get for Shattered Memories some are definitely weaker than others. What was nice about Shattered Memories was the fact that it brought shit from the sessions into the town. 2 is not exactly like that because it really is more based around James dealing confronting his own shortcomings through physical manifestation. They are similar of course and I still think that 2 is the better game but of of the titles released after the original 3, Origins and Shattered Memories are my favorites

I think FROM do the best enemy and boss designs of any current dev. They manage to make them genuinely horrific and disturbing. Its some fantastic mix of cronenbergesque body horror, elements of HR Gigers necronimicon with metal and bone fused together and good old fashioned spooky skellingtons and ghosts, all combined to make shambling horrors and spasmodically moving entities that you fear to engage. The fact that everything can kill you very easily in soulsborne games plus the fantastically atmospheric level designs add to the dread and tension.
I think souls games have picked up the mantle where the survival horror genre left off

If Del Toro ever actually gets the chance to make a game before the project is kill I think he'd create equally impressive if not even more impressive creature designs. I agree though FROM has put out some really impressive designs across their games. I wouldn't say they've quite taken up where survival horror left off but they do some amazing work.

"Byrgenwerth... Byrgenwerth... Blasphemous murderers... Blood-crazed fiends... Atonement for the wretches... By the wrath of Mother Kos... Mercy for the poor, wizened child... Mercy, oh please...
Atonement for the wretches... Lay the curse of blood upon them, and their children, and their children's children, for evermore. Each wretched birth will plunge each child into a lifetime of misery.
Mercy for the poor, wizened child... Let the pungence of Kos cling, like a mother's devotion...
Curse here, curse there. A curse for he, and she, why care. A bottomless curse, a bottomless sea, source of all greatness, all things that be. Listen for the baneful chants. Weep with them, as one in trance. And weep with us, oh, weep with us.
Listen for the baneful chants. A call to the bloodless, wherever they be. A call to the bloodless, wherever they be. Fix your ears to hear our calls.
... Ahh, sweet child of Kos, returned to the ocean. A bottomless curse, a bottomless sea. Accepting of all that there is, and can be."

Del Toro certainly has an eye for it, no doubt but its Wayne D. Barlowe who is responsible for all the fantastic creature designs you see in Del Toro films and particular style is his signature.

Yeah I just meant Del Toro it terms of visual design direction. What kills me is the fact that if we did get Silent Hills that would have been Del Toro and Junji Ito collaborating which would have been fucking amazing to see. I'm still hoping that since they were both interested in working together under Kojima that Kojima will revive that idea with a new project under his company at some point.

Wait, Junji Ito was gonna work on that?
I'd read that somewhere, but promptly forgot about it because I'm a fucking goldfish.

Goddamn, now I want Silent Hills to be a thing even more. Junji Ito made some of my favourite horror manga (from the most obvious ones like Gyo and Uzumaki to one of his short stories called Balloons - god that one scared the crap out of me for no adequate reason.)
>>
>>17649633
He obviously referred to the first part of the post
>>
>>17649735
I still feel a small shred of hope, they did meet up a while back even after it was cancelled. Especially hope Ito is still on the team, couldn't care less about Reedus though.
>>
Ecco the mothefucking dolphin.

Nobody will ever be able to convince me that this is not a horror game.
>>
>>17649762
yeah he was brought in for consultation at least and it sounded like he was interesting in actually doing some design stuff. Del Toro fucking loves Ito's work so he was really psyched about that too. I really do hope that collaboration does happen. Ito is one of my favorite horror manga artists too and i wanna see more collaborative stuff with him like that pokemon set he did as a halloween thing.

This might be a stretch to relate this to /x/, but the LISA series is GOAT in my opinion. It has some spooky ass designs and made me jump quite a few times. And all the games, especially Joyful, have really good music.

I remember I once had to run away from a whole horde and the only thing I had on me was a freaking blanket which I had somehow equipped.
Imagine a lone retard, running in the woods with a blanket in his hands, dehydrated and starving while being followed by half the (zombified) population of a small town.

Going out of your way to make a race joke about a game unrelated to the topic of thread woule be considered edgy. Contributing to the thread with a paranormal themed game is not. How could that be unclear?

Undying is the only game that ever completely scared the shit out of me.
The soundeffects were just so well done and it really felt like you were never alone. It kinda goes down hill when you get to hellish levels and the dungeons around the mansion, but still really a game everybody on this board should give a chance.

Until someone dies when you flood the fort trying to build a well and their body washes away into an unused mine tunnel where it lies undiscovered until the refuse hauler finally quits moping about his raggedy socks long enough to bring the bones up to the craftsman's workshop, but by then it's too late because urist mcghost has haunted the legendary miner who's already mourning the loss of his cavey during a plump helmet shortage, so he snaps and kills the cook, book keeper, farmer, and a merchant guard before being put down by war dogs in the dining hall which is currently hosting a party for urist mc56thchild resulting in mass trauma for all the guests and the inevitable tantrum spiral that kills any fort that manages to survive fps death.

And upon reclaiming the fort urist mcghost is still wandering the hallways, admiring a fine engraving of cheese in the statue gardens.

Ive enjoyed every single Silent hill game ive played and I agree. Downpour had some really cool segments. I like the story overall more than the gameplay.

Sadly downpour didnt have much variety in enemies, but being able to go all over the map was neat. And the few sequences with the energy shit following where cool too.

The rollercoaster was the best part tho.
>>
NightCry. It's the spiritual successor to the Clock Tower series.

I have!

While the controls and some things from the game can be considered dated it was really atmospheric, from the mood to the OST. The gameplay aged well for the most part too. It also had one of the most detailed gore systems which was a selling point.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMugxzoPf4M

The levels where you found human corpses were very unsettling since all you do is fight monsters through, but then realize that there were a few lives you couldn't save. Can’t say it spooked me a lot as a child but it certainly had an impact. But moments like the ship covered in blood full of corpses did terrify me (That was from India docks as well, as if the music wasn’t bad enough).

I’d argue Nightmare Creatures 2 was more creepy and unsettling, although I never managed to finish it because fuck emulation.

The franchise is under rated but sometimes I see small posts about it on /v/ that warms my heart.

Let's not forget when your entire fortress is slaughtered by an unspeakable abomination of the depths composed of star ruby that looks like a skinless scorpion and breathes deadly dust, while you can only watch in terror as your legendary warriors fail to as much as scratch it with their weapons then get torn apart and tossed across the once lively halls.

That game needs a reboot.

The way the powers are portraied and the easy controls make them on pair with games like Infamous and prototype if Midway wasnt such a shitty company.

Someone should buy the rights for the game or just copy the powers (since this would not be something that would put you in court).
