Voyager I and II are dangerous to humanity. The golden records hold all the secrets the aliens need to destroy humankind, from the secrets of DNA to exactly what we look like and WHERE WE LIVE? I believe the only course of action is immediately launching a nuclear payload to intercept and destroy this blunder in interstellar intelligence.

Well haven't any of you seen the original Star Trek movie?
>>
>>17586029
dude rockets are getting better every day if we use that new laser rocket that stephen hawkings making with that one billionaire with a nuke attached to it it could catch up to it lickity split quick and boom destroy the evidence
>>
>>17586029
"The crafts will be “gram-scale nano craft”, according to Yuri Milner, which will make their way through space using a “sail pushed by a light beam”. Their design will allow them to fly at 25 per cent of light speed." idk man thats pretty fast if its a nuke coming at you and you're fumbled intelligence that could doom the human race and all life on earth.
>>
>>17586054
drink some water you sound dehydrated
>>
>>17586018

Chances are that aliens from other planets are completely different than us and they will have absolutely no fucking clue on how to play the record or understand even a bit of it, it was a neat idea to send some information but while it makes some sense for us it most likely will mean fuck all to other races from other planets. If and when they find the golden record they will most likely just telepathically laugh their asses off at how retarded we are.
>>
>>17586018
I would suggest a more subtle approach; instead of destroying it, why not replace it with misinformation? Make the aliens think that cyanide, chlorine gas, or radiation is actually good for us and that our weaknesses are alcohol, drugs, and copious amounts of xeno-sex, then see how long it takes them to realize their "invasion" is actually a fuck-awesome party. By then, it will be too late, we'll all already be friends.
>>
>>17586094

But then we might still be fucked over either way, they will come visit us and give us cyanide and chlorine gas as gifts and lose their shit after we die.
>>
>>17586091
thing is it's not really like a regular record but it does have some songs too but there are pictures of dna and maps to our location and pretty scary stuff you don't want the borg to know about
>>
Chances are those shits are just gonna get pulled into the gravitational field of some dead planet and spend eternity rotating around it, or get smashed to pieces by an asteroid. The Chances of those tiny little things actually finding their way to an advanced alien species are pretty much nil.
>>
>>17586094
yeah like lets fill the galaxy with alien propaganda about how badass we are but just like vague hints so nobody ever wants to find us or fuck with us except to suck our dicks
>>
>>17586099
FUCK, didn't think of that... OK, new plan, we'll make sex, drugs, and alcohol both health-hazard weaknesses AND something we like, so they will just bring the space party to us either way. And it wouldn't technically be misinformation at that point.
>>
>>17586111
>whether the ayylmaos are friendly or hostile, we get party harded out of existence

I don't doubt that we are able to do it with todays science but OP seems to mean that WE are supposed to do it. If you don't have a nuclear warhead in your garage, were pretty fucked with succeeding at destroying it.

>>
>>17586018
I'm guessing that any alien race in a position to use that information against us would probably be able to defeat us without it. Simply being able to get to Earth in a reasonable time frame would already put their technology vastly above ours.
>>
>>17586018
This

This single act could have doomed all mankind.

But then again the aliens probably already know we are here.

If aliens can find Voyager out in space, they'd probably have no problem detecting life on earth without the need to find Voyager.
>>
>>17586091

There are some important universal constants on there. Any race advanced enough to intercept it would have to know these universal constants to make the tech to be in space. This would let them know that the pictograms have some intended meaning, and they would eventually decipher it.

Unless they're just weird space whales that live in space.
>>
>>17586122

Waves dissipate over distance. At any reasonable distance from earth the waves would be indistinguishable from background noise.

We have sent out intentionally concentrated bursts that don't dissipate much in the past, but the idea that we're constantly pumping out detectable noise is wrong.
>>
>>17586018
You're either incredibly retarded or just trying to be funny. Even if we would do such a thing, we'd have to launch it the exact same way we launched Voyager I and II, by using the "slingshot" method. AND if we did that the bomb wouldn't collide for YEARS. Go fuck yourself OP.

They will both disintegrate long before they reach any civilization.

Do you really think interstellar space is filled with nothing? It's filled with infinite FUCK just waiting for you to leave the magnetic shield of our star.
>>
>>17586838
>The problem aliens and humans, have in common is the speed of light?

This meme needs to die.

The speed of light is simply a self imposed barrier created through our own ignorance of physics.

Light can't travel fast enough to escape gravity, which means that if you could harness enough gravity, you could travel faster than light.

Space is expanding, which means that it is a medium like liquid or gas. This means that there are ways to move through space that we have yet to discover or master, much in the same way it took us forever to discover and master moving through gas using airplanes designed to create lift.

Ok, OP, seems legit.

Lauch those nukes, boy.

What? You can't? Are you saying you're talking all that shit even though you have absolutely no means to accomplish what you propose?

Well, then, why are you even talking about it?
>>
>>17586902
Why would they? Why do we go about assuming aliens would be just like humans in that they want to kill and conquer everybody else?
>>
>>17586018
Why is this thread still here?
Why is this even a thread in the first place? Any species with the capacity to travel to the earth in a reasonable amount of time (as in: before our species destroys itself) is not going to need our help finding us or understanding our DNA or biochemistry.
>>
>>17590131
The point is that, if they wanted to destroy us, it would be easy for them if they have the technology to reach earth.

And if they actually were peaceful at first, we would most likely make them angry because we are retarded and would try to kill them anyways

To be honest, if ET's are out there, and faster than light travel/communication is possible, their has to be some sort of government in place.

Hell, there's probably a rule saying we aren't allowed to establish contact until after X is done / discovered.

Or, the universe is just a dog eat dog world
>>
>>17587662
Take environmental science you're embarrassing yourself
>>
>>17590131
I'm not making that assumption. All I meant was that if there was an alien race that was inclined to attack us, and capable of doing so, they probably wouldn't need the information on the golden records.

Light is anything but a "self imposed barrier" dumbass. The speed of light has been derived from electricity and magnetism (duh), which at one point were considered to not be related at all. Light also brings up more questions due to its behavior (look up wave particle duality or dual nature of light).

You can reply all you want with your pseudo bullshit statements and historical quotes, but as this anon mentioned >>17590175 , anyone who ever bothered to take any Physics II course can easily tell that you are just speaking out of your ass
>>
We could use the starship parked at Area 51.
>>
Ok let's put this in perspective.
*Any race that might exist in space and can reach our planet from the mind boggling distances between galaxies is insanely high tech.
*The universe has basically infinite amounts of solar systems.
*Any resources a alien race would need could be found in massive quantities if you look hard enough (we have found diamond planets).
*And these resources could be taken with out bothering any living creature.
*Any race that could find us, CAN destroy us with out a thought. But they don't need to.

In conclusion the worst humanity has to fear from a alien race is a few us being dissected for curiosity sake.

We are the equivalent of a Midget trying to punch a giant, while they hold the midget at arms length.

There is no point in attacking us.
>>
>>17586018
Think about it OP. Maybe they will enslaveus and then after hundreds of years we will get civil rights in their advanced society and civilization. Effectivly spearheading us into an advanced culture, where we can then turn on them and introduce them to Alien Guilt.
>>
Voyager 1 has been on mission for 38 years now. It travels at tens of thousands of miles per hour. How the hell could you destroy something going that fast at almost 40 years out??
>>
Oh they know about us. Theyre underneath us inside the earth.
>>
>>17592823
There's also the problem of finding its location. It's a small and fast target, and a nuke is not a shotgun, let alone a guided missile at those distances.
>>
>>17592681
good one
>>
>>17592084

The speed of light IS a self imposed barrier, and the barrier is our own ignorance.

What don't you morons understand about our current ignorance regarding the laws of physics? You act as if we know everything there is to know already, which we sure as hell don't.

You idiots are no different than the dumb motherfuckers that thought it was impossible to cross the oceans back in the day.
>>
>>17592670

This.

I hold that the ONLY "resource" that is actually rare in the cosmos is life itself, and that when you've advanced enough to travel between the stars, you realize that, and treat life the way we treat endangered species.

By the time an intelligent species evolves to the point they can understand the physics of the cosmos enough to be able to travel around, they've probably evolved to the point where they no longer need to use violence to compete for resources, and no longer use aggression for anything other than defense.

Could be wrong, though, of course...
>>
>>17586029

Faster rocket, duh

You will only need to hit it at the speeds we're talking about here; twice the velocity will fragment it into little bits
>>
>>17587293
This. They're going to get fucked up anyway from fast moving particles and micrometeorites.
>>
>>17594858
Sometimes I like to remind myself that 20 years ago we weren't sure there were any other planets in the universe beyond our own solar system.
>>
>>17594858
While a little more aggressive than I would put it, this guy has the right idea.
>>
>>17594921

Hasn't even been 100 years since we knew other galaxies existed in the cosmos, and yet niggers think we won't discover new shit to make old shit obsolete.

>"but muh speed o' light limit!"

Morons.
