A thermal blanket, also known as a "space blanket", are highly efficient blankets made out of extremely thin and light heat reflecting plastic. You can purchase them from outdoors stores because they're popular backpacking/survival equipment. I've done some additional research, and it seems that specifically this was not a "human" thermal blanket, but some of the same sort of material attached to the outside of the International Space Station (you can see some here in this pic). During docking, one of the pieces came dislodged and fell into orbit

I'm glad I was able to find this, because it was bugging me how the fuck a normal thermal blanket would get outside the ship.
