The entire point is that they never needed to put the cameras up there in the first place, let alone go to great lengths to make it entirely available to everyone, for free, for all time. If they're going to be lying and monitoring and censoring footage, why not just never tell anyone the cameras are up there?
It's entirely reasonable that they wouldn't be able to / wouldn't want to go to the lengths to create a live internet feed. Before they did it, people didn't think it was possible. Bandwidth in orbit is limited. A 24 / 7 live feed is *expensive*!

It's also not difficult to put it on the internet, where it can be accessed for free. Again, this isn't hard or expensive. You have a feed, if an unknown object comes into view, you stop the feed.
