Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. It looks like mars had microbial life, and that it existed long ago. Whether microbial life started on mars before earth is hard to determine. To determine if there was advanced life on mars we would need to put better equipment on mars that can dig deeper. Right now on the surface it doesn't appear like there was ever any civilization, but the atmosphere is hostile and May have destroyed the remnant on the surface. If there were a nuclear holocaust on earth then it was left to sit for a billion years the surface might look just like mars, but you'd still find remnant of us underground.

Maybe, but there's no proof. No more proof than proof of God from a Jesus looking water stain. Meaning that both sides of the argument have equal amount of viability so to a lack of evidence, which means the ous to provide evidence is on the individual who claims something exists, ie you.
