Lovecraft was a pretty crappy writer. I always see the final twist coming from miles away, and the endings are usually anticlimactic.
He also firmly believed that if you're gonna write horror, you need to have the narrator spend most of the story telling the readers that they're supposed to be scared, which gets annoying quickly.

Hw had some great ideas, and he indirectly lead to a lot of stuff I like, but Lovecraft's actual stories were a gigantic dissapointment to me.
