Alright /x/ I have some OC, and I have no idea what it is. I was given this by a friend several years ago. She asked what I wanted for helping her move, and I saw this guy and told her, she gave it to me. Were still friends, and I asked her where she got it. Her grandfather gave it to her, and it belonged to his father. The family line descends from northern Europe. Is this a tool or something ceremonial?

North European reporting in. You can rule out ceremonials. All our old 'ceremonials' include bonfires mostly.

It's an old manhole cover key.

Google "vintage brass manhole cover key".

Sorry, nothing magical about it.

It seems to be a nail or spike, on the ring.

Similar... but this isn't consistent enough to be a key... pretty close though.... curious.

I'm thinking so too, who would go thru this trouble on the handle? For a dumb tool. The ornate nature doesn't fit a simple tool, though both ends have marks from being struck.
>>
>>17550292
Dude Idk, why would someone spend this much time on a tool you could get anywhere. The handle sis hollowed through, and there are little inlays. Besides, the actual shape of the manhole key doesn't match. The angles aren't right for this thing to open something like that.

If that's a manhole cover key, it was never intended to be actually used as one, look at the wheel on the bottom where the lid would be lifted, that would be useless for lifting a cover, and whats with the nail attached at the bottom? Theres no way this is a manhole key, the ornate-ness doesnt even matter, it wouldnt function as one regardless of the decoration.
>>
I have an idea. Probably pretty retarded but I'm going to give it a shot.

What if you use the spike as a nail, attach it to a ceiling for example. Then you can hang things on it? Then it would make sense why it is decorated if it used to be indoors.

Are there any horsefags in here? Could it be a piece of bridle/tack for a horse? Those rings and spikes seem suspiciously like tack.

>>17550429

>>
>>17550429
ok let's just logic this out...

The only reason for their to be a spike there is to drive it into something. The only reason to drive it into something is to give lateral resistance against the spike, against the ring, and against the handle.

Its not a manhole key, because youd want resistance along the shaft, this looks more like its meant to pull sideways on something, or for something to pull sideways on it, holding it in place. Like a tether. Theres no other reason for it to be built like that. So what would you need a device like that for?
>>
Its a horse shoe hammer made by a guy that liked meta work. I don't know shit about horsrs . but its obviously been hammering shit.and its curved. Think of the horses foots awkward position when shoeing one. Need a curve.

The pin is probably to pry the shoe. And its hanging so your not gonna be taking huge swings with it. So it can dangle

>>
>>17550487
it's of practical size for a ferriers hammer, that makes sense even if it is really ornate. It even explains the spike.
>>
>>17550474
This makes the most sense so far desu.
>>
>>17550496
How are you supposed to strike the pin with the hammer, they are not detachable. They are worked on to the hammer.
>>
>>17550502
no you dont strike the pin with the hammer, the hammer drives the nails into the shoe, the "pin"/"spike" is for prying the shoe loose, you'd need both, its actually two different tools.
>>
>>17550498
Also this, I'm not familiar with horses, so I'm nit familiar with hooves or shoes on hooves.
>>
>>17550508
Can you provide an example of a similar device?
>>
maybe an award for a ferriers competition would explain why its so ornate?
>>
>>17550508
Never mind. You are correct sir. Good call
>>
>>17550477
Looks to be the perfect size to drive a nail or tac . u wouldn't want a big hammer if ur shoeing a lot.

in this case, were talking about numbers 4, and 8. They just happen to be lashed together with the metal ring for convenience.

The spike is not driven into the shoe with the hammer, the spike is used to pry an old shoe off before putting a new one on, with the hammer.

oh! a Flintknapping Hammer, yes thats exactly what it is. And the pick is a nipple pick for the lock.

Ok what you have here is a tool used by flintlock gunners, old muzzleloaders, thats exactly what it was, and it explains the brass rivet style pattern on it because it would match the other equipment. The hammer was used for crafting the little flints used to spark the powder tray, theyd get old and worn out and they needed a little hammer to make new flints.

Thats actually fucking nice, I wonder how old it is. You might go ask /k/ or /out/ if there are any black powder shooters who might be able to identify it better.

I 100% guarantee you thats what this is.

No problem, Im actually the one you told to get fucked to death by velociraptors, glad I stuck around anyway.

Honestly, that thing could easily be 17th century man. You might want to get that to a historical society or a museum and see what they make of it. I have no idea what it's worth, but to the right collector that would be an amazing piece.

I saw your gun oil in the background, it may be of personal interest to you. You can get involved in black powder shooting like that for less than 1000 bucks. If you're already a /k/ommando, that might be awesome.

Cool find, sorry it wasnt a universe key.
