They're only spooky if they're unlabeled or have a homemade label. Don't think anyone would be pissing themselves if they came across pic related.
>>
Because of pre-teens thinking Creepypastas are cool

Might piss myself with joy.

That was a great movie, back in the day.

Here's the thing about that. Kids have weird notions because the adults around them have weird notions. For them to think an obsolete technology is obscure enough to be creepy, they have to have no casual contact with it. No elderly relative or neighbor babysitting who ran tapes of cartoons to keep them occupied, no hoarders or progress-resisters in the family.

Or they saw the ring and now every vhs tape is creepy. You never hear these fags going on about 8-tracks are so scary.

Kids these days will never experience the true mom & pop video store of old. They basically converted an old house into a store. Each bedroom had different genres of film: Horror/Sci-fi, Action, Comedy/Romance, Childrens, Concert films would be in the hallway because there weren't that many. The living room had the new releases. The kitchen would be the check out counter. The coat closet would house the pornos "18 and over ONLY!"

The thought of spending the night inside a video store, like throwing a sleeping bag in the middle of it always creeped me out for some reason. VHS covers back in the day were creepier than the dvd or blurays now. The people on the covers all stared right thru your soul it seemed.

I thought a lot of people died while making those movies or after and their souls were trapped in each VHS magnetic tape and would haunt anybody who dared spend the night in the store.

Watching someone function through autism is strange. Thanks anon.

they were always creepy. like having a minority for a gardener, it was just our only option at the time.

Because a jap made a series of books about one of those being cursed, which were adapted into japanese movies and then plagiarized by Hollywood.
>>

What if someone recorded over it with sick fetish porn? You just have to put a piece of tape over where the tab was. Or just swap the cases. Five screws and some fiddling, perfect disguise.

>>17535948
Because 8 track tapes
1. look like game cartridges, and
2. contain music that these days plays mainly on Oldies stations.
Videotapes and audiotapes can actually contain creepy stuff because people could record themselves doing fucked up things.

The Ring is iconic, but it isn't enough of an explanation by itself. People don't watch Mirrors and afterwards think mirrors are scary things. They don't watch the second Ghostbusters movie and from then on think oil paintings are scary.

Maybe it's because VHS tapes are oblong and usually black. Maybe there's something about the lines and audio skips, like with film reels. That the medium has a distinct character to it, one to which they're unfamiliar.

You know how old books smell? I remember going to the college library on summer afternoons, going to the far part of the upper floor. That's where they kept the bound journals and foreign language collections, so hardly anyone went up there. That area was steeped in the scent of sunlight on page-edges. Imagine how uncomfortable that smell would make someone who learned to read off a Kindle. Or the smell of wood smoke to someone raised in a house with electric heat?
>>
Only time I didn't like vhs tapes is when it got to the very end, it would make this loud unnecessary noise. Nope
>>

In my life I have found three unlabeled VHS tapes. They all contained bad porn.

Because you only have one copy of the recording and if you break it you lose it.
>>
>>17535948
This. It's literally because of The Ring.

>mirrors and oil paintings

Predates vhs and movies in general. Any fears were long before any movies were made unlike fear of videotapes.
