Why do old photographs (in black and white) are so frightening and mysterious?
As a kid I used to think that the world before 1950 was in black and white.

But seriously, it's just because--I assume--you aren't use to black and white pictures and the unfamiliar is unsettling. I grew up looking at plenty of black and white images, newspapers, old family photos, etc, so there's nothing creepy about old b&w photos.
Additionally, we live in a society that is selfie crazy and constantly posting images and video of our everyday boring ass shit like our food, pets, friends, or relatives, cars, houses, whatever, just because we can, so you are used to seeing those types of pictures...
Conversely, photography in the past was not as ubiquitous and prolific as it was today. Photographs were special and usually saved for solemn or extremely important occasions or used only in dire circumstances. Therefore most of the old photographs that exist contain people that do not look happy, nor are accompanied by joyous or frivolous circumstances. Ergo, those pics tend to have a more somber mood to them.
Also, the stark contrast of B&W and subtle grey scale often presents a subconscious feeling of "good versus evil" as Black vs. White.
