In malaysia we have similiar creature like this but a bit difference background called penangal(i might be wrong how it is wrote), here the penangal is a witch who practice dark arts/magic that required them to eat new born's umbilical cord to fuel up their magic(i presume, because the old people never say why), when hunting, they will split into 2, the head and the body, the head will fly with the backbone attached to hunt, while they left the body behind, they does not required to kill to get cord, either from stealing it from the baby(the still attached cord) or just by getting the thrown cord(usually burried).
If anyone can correct me please do, from what i heard, it's difference from culture to country)
