This painting looks like it was done by someone with a fair about of skill
I'm just not sure I can convince myself that:
1) He somehow decided to paint an unusually large and elliptical sun.
2) If he was trying to depict rays coming through the clouds he wouldn't bother to paint any sort of break in the clouds (in fact it seems he made the clouds darker where the break should be)
Then there's also those 3 small bright spots on the "sun"
Someone said it could be a halo. But how am I supposed to understand why this halo would be at some slight angle, and why would it look like it's being projected so far away from the body?
The most convincing "normal" explanation I can come up with is that the artist is just representing a large bright spot on the clouds with the ellipse, and the 3 small dots were the break in the clouds letting sun rays through (even if he depicted the rays coming down from angles that don't come from the dots)
But then again I'm back to thinking that I would expect such a representation to come from an artist with much less skill than this one seems to have.
I have to admit it looks more like a ufo than anything else.
