I have a sneaking suspicion that our egos are here to not only facilitate between the lower and higher urges, but are also here to keep traumas experienced on this level relatively minimum (through building emotional barriers and defense mechanisms and all that jazz). To have complete death of the ego would be inviting a floodgate of Too Much Damn Stuff to hit ya real hard.
I don't really believe that's possible, the ego is maybe the most important part of the human psyche, without it we would be like a robot or a zombie, without self awarness or free will.

I've read that if you take enough shrooms, you start losing the ability to differentiate between yourself and your environment. Although I'm not entirely sure what that means.

It can be done short term, but you lose all drive completely and become transparent to stimuli (and mental images of being made of crystals are somewhat commonplace). A very dangerous state to be in since you can't lie, can't reject suggestions (you will ignore them but you won't object to them), and will be generally unable to tell time or relate to anyone around you until the effect dies down.
Can be an excellent way of dealing with trauma, since it "resets" certain patterns of thought, but it's not for the weak or for people who don't have at least a basic understanding of psychology and psychiatry.

I had a similar experience smoking salvia... Myself, my friends and the Earth were one homogenous entity. It was kind of eerie though, I felt very lonely - almost as if I was the only conscious one and everyone else was controlled by the Earth and had an ulterior motive against me.
