Hi /x/, I came across some local news that you might find interesting. Nothing too crazy by /x/ standards, but it kind of related to the Long Island Serial Killer (never caught).

>Suffolk County police chief James Burke catches someone (Christopher Loeb) stealing a duffel bag from his van
>Loeb later testifies that the bag contained porn and sex toys
>Burke handcuffs Loeb in a cell and repeatedly beats him
>from an article: A few days later, James Burke, 51, bragged to other Suffolk cops about his attack on the addict, saying it reminded him of his “old days” as a young police officer, and even called the detectives who watched the assault his “palace guards”
>just a few months, Burke was arrested for the beating of Loeb
That's all I found about that story. My only question is, was Loeb's theft a random act or did he have a reason to steal from Burke?

Something else I read about Burke: he had apparently resisted help from the FBI with regards to catching the Long Island Serial Killer, who had killed 10-17 sex workers over the course of 20 years and dumped their bodies along the same highway.

Also of note: at some point during his rise in the ranks, he had had a relationship with a prostitute.

What does /x/ make of this?

HOLY CRAP and I just realized he lives around the corner from me.

Spooky.

The info about the LI serial killer you can get from wikipedia.

>Even today the crime is remembered, with a shudder, across Long Island.

>Hidden in the woods in Smithtown, N.Y., a boy’s battered body was found with six rocks jammed down his throat.

>The prosecution’s key witnesses included a teenager named James Burke, whose testimony against his neighborhood friends helped send them to prison.

Oh yeah I forgot to say: thanks. Yeah that is pretty weird. I read about it a few weeks ago then just remembered it and decided to make a thread.
>>
>>17489996
I wonder if he killed those hookers, and killed that kid when he was a teenager, and blamed it on them.
>>
>>17489882
I think its retarded he refused help from the FBI, but I somewhat understand the idea of keeping it under wraps so you don't scare off the killer or make the public panic. But by that point it really didn't matter anyway

Also, the whole local vs Federal police rivalry on cases is purely for tv. We have some navy NCIS guys that are really helpful in my area and don't ever but heads with the local cops
>>
>>17490665
unlikely
a sex worker wouldn't go off with a kid and its doubtful a teenager could over power a grown woman so easily, and successfully that many times
>>
>>17489882
Holy crap there was a thread about it
>>
>several years ago
>sometimes walk dog to nearby wooded area and get a little high
>once after I left I see a heavyset gray-haired man with a police jacket (or something, I just remember he was wearing something that made me think he was a police officer) getting out of a car parked in a driveway
>be slightly paranoid that he might know/care that I'm high
>be yesterday
>see article about Burke with a picture of his house
>it's the same guy and same house

What a fuckin weird coincidence.
>>
>>17491243
He wasn't a kid, the Long Island Serial Killer is a recent thing. I think the first bodies were found in the late 90's.

The thing that happened when he was a teenager is totally separate. A teenage neighbor was found dead. Burke was apparently a witness and claimed that 4 kids in his neighborhood were the murderers. Retrials have apparently been going on up until the early 2000's (maybe they're still going on?).

Fuck, I'm going further down this rabbit hole and I found a blog post about it, and an anonymous wrote a longish comment about the police being incompetent at the time and had coerced a confession out of the 4 boys:

>I somewhat understand the idea of keeping it under wraps so you don't scare off the killer or make the public panic
I dunno about that logic. What are you going to do, not investigate the murders? Also, he bragged about beating a guy while his "palace guards" watched, I feel like impeding the FBI was a selfish pride thing. Or worse, if he was covering it up.

The guy he beat for stealing his duffel bag had said he'd found "freaky" porn and sex toys. I'm not sure what specifically that means. Can anyone else find an article where he specifically states what it was? Imagine if it's like some kind of violent fetish shit?

>>17491245
You mean when it was mentioned in this thread: >>17483301
Or was there another?
>>
>>17491438
my mistake, I read that as "teenager killed hookers"
>>
>>17491474
no. if a serial killer heard the FBI is getting involved they are more than likely going to panic because there are bigger fish after them now. so they run and the case never gets solved. Even coming out and saying "we have a serial killer on the loose" makes the public panic and suddenly you get literally thousands of calls from people with tips or information that is mostly nothing but bogs down the investigation. Just because theyre playing dumb doesn't mean theyre not investigating. But by then point is was pretty pointless and they just coming off looking like assholes

as far as the beating the thief over his sex toys, that's probably more of a pride and panic thing. Shit, they found my sex toys and my face is going to be in the paper as the kinky pervert sheriff and ill have to quit. I know id kill before somebody finds my fap folder

I don't know, maybe he did do it but theres a few other angles to look at this from

he had a history of covering up his abuse of power.

they think he used "legal" wiretaps improperly, to listen into conversations between his detectives and federal agents so he could see what they were saying about him and if the feds were building a case against him.

this guy has something wrong with him for sure, even if he isn't the killer. but i can't help wondering because he seemed to think he could anything he wanted without being held responsible (and until now, he basically has).

my bus-stop for high school was directly in front of his house.
>hello fellow smithtown/st james fag

>random act
Loeb is a heroine addict, he wanted to steal shit for drug money. Also Burke lives across the street from a park that has a lot of heroine related activity.
>the sex killer thing
not specifically, suffolk county pd is really shitty and lazy; and can't really do shit when something serious really happens because it's a super safe area. They tried to say it wasn't a serial killer so they wouldn't have to investigate and likely to avoid bad press as the area relies on tourism pretty heavily. I know SCPD fucked up and actually lost a lot of evidence though so they FBI couldn't do much.
>lots of cops have relationships with prostitutes as fucked up as that is.
>>
>>17491590
so hes a dick of a cop, there are plenty of them out there
abusing your power is one thing (and he still should be charged if its true) but its a whole different ball game to consider him a sexual sadist and multiple murderer

I remember in college we had some real SVU detectives dome in to talk about campus rape and one of them pointed out the hardest thing about it was making damn sure you have some evidence to back up those claims. If you label somebody with something like that, and it turns out they were innocent, it doesn't matter. that shit sticks

Heyyy another Smithtownfag on /x/. Why'd you have to take a bus from there? Were you in HS during the time that the East building was a middle school?

>>17493229
I'm not saying he IS the Long Island killer, but the fan fiction I am creating in my head is that there is like a "secret club" of police and maybe local business owners and politicians that meets up with prostitutes (kinda like One-Eyed Jacks in Twin Peaks) that specifically do kinky violent fetish stuff, and maybe sometimes they go too far and have to dump get rid of a body. I guess it's weird that they wouldn't try harder to hide the bodies, but then again they haven't been caught.

youd be interested in the (supposed) Nebraska pedo rings from the 80s., with Johnny gosch and all that. Along with similar groups in England in the 1970s because that's pretty much the working theory if you believe in that stuff

sucked.

It's true though, heroine has been getting exponentially worse in the area and the SCPD has done very little to curb it. I also know a lot of retired officers from the department who would agree with me.

I mean, it depends what you mean by normal. But if prostitutes are getting killed because of it, particularly by the police, I wouldn't call that normal... at least it shouldn't be.
