Ask around. If you're an antisocial fuck just google local shit. There's a bunch of poorly-made websites out there that list off tons of shit. Half or more of it's probably not real but it's a start. Alternatively, you could put an ad in your local newspaper and charge people for your services. If people have legit ghost problems they'll call you up. The dough you get for it is a nice plus.

A flashlight and a camera that isn't shit. If you can afford it, take two more with tripods and set them up to record all night. If you're working outdoors, camera traps might be a wise investment. If people are hearing footsteps, ask the members of the household if it would be okay to spread some flour on the floor. Whatever it is might leave footprints.
>How many people should I bring?
At least one other person you know and are comfortable with being around. You have no idea how much sanity some company can save you. Depending on the size and layout of the place, 3-6 people should be enough. A dog might be a good choice because animals supposedly have ghost senses and shit.
