As I understand this, his experiments failed but he assumed this was because he did the experiment backwards, fertilizing chimpanzee females with human sperm. He wanted to try the experiment the other way, fertilizing human females with chimpanzee sperm, even had "volunteers", but his funding was then cut and the project aborted.
By the laws of hybridization it is entirely possible to create interspecific and even intergeneric hybrids, maybe he even succeeded at one point but it wasn't published as it would hurt people's feelings. Nobody, as far as we know, tried it again.
If the experiment was to be replicated, I'd bet China is the one who'd be doing it, they have a very loose definition of ethics and morals and have already been investing big in genetic engineering.
