The actual historical Jesus (as the name is now known) is not who is in the tales.
The tales as we have them now are a strange mix (even just the four Gospels). One is an allegory of astrology, speaking about the late Age of Pisces and coming Age of Aquarius. Another is the so-many-times retold tale of so many deities, from Egypt and so many other retellings. The Council of Nicaea rejected many sources more closely related to the actual historical Jesus in both time and origin, preferring later versions which they liked to call more consistent, despite many inconsistencies. Part of that was agenda to maintain control on the populace through religion. However, some bits of older tales may have remained, despite even evidence of heavy editing.
The actual historical Jesus, I believe, was a mystic. I think the adoptionist theories are closer to correct (he was born a man and was adopted by God as a son), but that he taught his followers how they could all be adopted by God as children.
I think he was taught the popular form(s) of Jewish mysticism, and in those years he supposedly traveled abroad, he did perhaps visit the far East, at least India, where he saw some similar philosophies as some aspects of that mysticism being taught to the masses in stead of being kept a secret.
There are old versions of Christianity claiming Jesus taught to find the Christ nature within, and not about any actual messiah.
Jesus, in more of a nutshell than I would ever like to put it into in this one post, tried to teach aspects of mysticism to the masses, for inner growth, becoming better people, and becoming above 'sin,' and thereby fulfilling the old laws and even transcending them -- defeating the authoritarian aspects of the law by charitable deeds, self-sacrifice, and loving one another.
