This isn't incredibly paranormal, but I can see the merit in it. The problem is that the central nervous every system regulates every facet of the organism to maintain itself, from the chemical composition of the fluids it's bathed in to the pressure of those fluids coursing through it. Without the ability to communicate and regulate its physiological needs, it won't get exactly what it needs to survive.
