It isn't that. It's just that no one is prepared, or the few that are may still die or hole up tight. You ever read/see The Mist? Portal to another world opens, eldritch, alien horrors pour out at an alarming rate, entire world engulfed in a strange mist, and any who go out doors are dragged off and eaten by a myriad of strange beasts. What's cool is that it's not even demonic (despite what some insane main characters will try to say), they just seem like animals who are just as confused as the humans are. They are just so utterly hostile that we can't adapt and nothing makes sense any more.
It's also a story about humans surviving in a store with limited food and water, and turning on one another. Same old. Honestly I like the monster shit more.
