Firstly OP, my sincere condolences for your Dad passing away. I hope you do find solace and comfort with those close to you during this difficult time and I would like to let you know that there are definitely brighter days ahead.
Unfortunately the bad news is you may not receive a response right away, as your Dad himself will need to learn and find a way to communicate back to you (other than random signs e.g: raps on the wall etc..).
But the good news is most spirits are drawn to powerful emotions (either positive or negative).
So if you would like to at least get a "message" across to him and can put both your and his soul at ease:
Firstly think of a time when you and your dad shared a positive, fond moment (could be anything like sharing a beer at home and chatting or maybe a fishing trip?) OR you can grab a photo of you and him (can also contain other people but just you and him is best...) and concentrate/dwell on that exact moment.
Try to concentrate on that moment, as if you were wearing an "Occulus rift" headset, while concentrate on and remember different sounds (laughter), sights, smells, tastes and physical touches (the cold of the beer, the warmth of your clothing etc...).
After a point when you have immersed yourself in the moment, try and imagine bringing up a new topic of conversation and choosing an opportunity to tell him goodbye and let him know how you feel...
The positive emotions brought about during this happy event will allow you to setup and convey your feelings with clarity than if you were sad/crying. Also your Dad will be drawn to this event as it was most likely a positive event in his life as well.
Note that this is not exactly meditation and/or prayer, as you will not be doing this repeatedly and you're not asking for something, so no need to put any relaxing music, or light candles etc...just a quiet room and a fond memory of you and him to serve as an "emotional anchor" for your thoughts.

Op my dad passed 3 years ago (55) a week or so after I started really urning to talk with him one last time, that night in my dreams I had, it was like he never passed and he was in the basement jamming out on guitar like normal, so I joined him on the drums one last time. It lasted most of the dream until he put his hand on my shoulder and smiled at me. That part lasted a long time. Not sure how this helps, but I've only ever told this to my brother.
