How would one know if one was in purgatory?
By searching for the answer. In the end only you will know the truth. There are trying times ahead brother. Steel yourself. The lion and dragon are both awake.

Depends on your belief of purgatory. Some hardline christian sects believe it is no different from the fires of hell, except it isn't always eternal.
In pop culture, Supernatural depicts it as a place where anything goes, so of course eventually it is only inhabited by murderous creatures and people.
The only "good" rendition of purgatory I've heard is that it's a form of limbo. You can't really do much other than wait, and it's a metaphysical realm so you can't occupy your time with sleeping and eating. Sure it would be alright if you had other people to spend it with, but I don't know if that's how it works.

Same for the "levels of hell". Learn to separate fact from fiction, plebs.
