The Secret Teachings of all Ages
The section on the man with a Familiar he can't get rid of is a chilling, precautionary tale.

Not sure if troll, but another theory of knowledge classic:
>>17370712
Not the guy who posted it, but I was thinking of doing something similar myself.
No matter how much or how little you believe in the paranormal, rational thought and critical thinking are what the world needs more of, especially these days. If you're completely unskeptical of everything, you'll believe anything, no matter how ridiculous. I think there exists paranormal phenomena worth studying, but you have to weed out the junk to get to the gems.
>>17370716
I like some heady, hermeneutic, metaphysical, linguistic stuff that is functionally indistinguishable from magic. Reason gets to a point where it starts coming full circle, tbt.
>>17370726
Wittgenstein is great, truly metaphysical in a literal sense.
This one volume is a necessity for every /x/phile's collection.
>>17370749
>promotes book that obviously didn't work for him
>>17370731
>truly metaphysical in a literal sense.
I'm not sure Witty would like you saying that.
>>17370762
lol i don't think later Wittgenstein would mind. Still..the way he organizes reality around facts in logical space...it is literally meta-physical. Especially since signs do not actually correspond to objects.
>>17370716
>rational thought and critical thinking are what the world needs more of
Im not sure if you can learn these from a single book, books that try to teach you how to think usually bullshit you more than anything else. Better to read a shit ton and take a few nuggets of 'truth' from each.
This is a great book for understanding the basis of hermeticism
>>17370726
I see you wrote some words, but they don't make sense. Explain yourself better.
>>17370787
>Im not sure if you can learn these from a single book, books that try to teach you how to think usually bullshit you more than anything else.
Well yeah, of course you can't learn everything from a single book, but if a book is good enough, you can learn a lot. I guess it's subjective as to what is "good" or not, though.
>Better to read a shit ton and take a few nuggets of 'truth' from each.
Agreed.
I feel like this should be mandatory.
>>17370823
The authors are known conartists though, a waste of time
>>17370859
are they good con artists tho?
and on a related note is the author in pic related worth reading?
>>17370874
>are they good con artists tho?
Well no, since they got caught
>>17370895
everyone gets caught, i was wondering if they can spin a yarn.
>>17370674
This.
Lovecraft's works are pretty good.

>>17370672
You don't have to meme all the time.
>>17372278
None of them really belong here, but... whatever.
>>17372291
>The stories of Edgar Allan Poe do not belong on the Paranormal board
Is this more appropriate for what you think /x/ is actually about, or should I scrounge around for some hokey grimoire of magick or my Vampire: the Masquerade handbook instead?
>>17370951
I have that on the shelf next to me. It's the only /x/ book I have honestly.
>>17372312
Funny how all your /x/ books are fiction. At least Illuminatus has some good stuff in it.
Two volume set.
Three volume set.
I liked this one a lot and the author is really thorough.
>>17370694
Read this after that.
>>17370716
>rational thought and critical thinking are what the world needs more of, especially these days
People who really don't know anything about science always associate the paranormal with "irrational" thinking when scientists tend to exhibit exactly the same biases. You can train a person on logic and the scientific methods all you want, but in the end it's got to do more with their personality and how open they are to entertain new ideas rather than actual knowledge.
I'm an engineer and I see this all the time.
>>17373852
this.
archaeologist/anthropologist here
This absolutist thinking of "paranormal == irrational" "science == rational" is poison, so it works both ways, the soft sciences are even more prone to this bullshit. A rational mind set is a tool, and a practice, not a set of beliefs.
>>17370660
Uh, nope.
Here's a review of "The Mammoth Encyclopedia of the Unsolved"

You're obviously a charlatan, or you would be offering some actual insight, instead of arguing over the definition of board names on an anonymous Vietnamese crochet chatroom

I actually have a printed version of his manifesto and some essays by him. Guy has some interesting ideas, but clearly finds the wrong solution for the problems we're facing as a species.
Surprised none of my fellow gnostic /x/bros have posted this. I have a beautiful mobi version if anyone wants it.

The hermetica is great. I have a copy of that. My bird chewed off half of the cover unfortunately.

You are right. I'm not a Christian and I don't respect Christianity, but I do like the bible stories, and they are definitely /x/ related.
>>17374833
You can get the ebook/kindle for 6 dollars. If you have a job, this should not be a problem.

Nice try

Yes please.
The Golden Bough
Somewhat outdated but still relevant.
Also the Kolbrin Bible if you can snag a copy.
