Metro 2
Game should have won awards amn, I love how it moves from one gameplay area to the next with a few relax periods between to grab some ammo and get a striptease or whatever. Masterful game. The scary parts are when you are running low on bullets and swarms or horrific beastly monsters are running toward you. You're backtracking through the level in reverse until you take a wrong turn and hit a dead end, bam! out of ammo, switch to your shotgun, only 6 shots then a loooong reload. Nevermind they ate your face. Or when you're above ground in the fallout and need to find some air filters cause you only have 40 seconds left on your last one cause you decided to go exploring halfway through. Gasp gasp gasp oh shit I fell in the water, where the fuck did these creatures come from mutant cockroaches?!
It's an awesome game, good for jump scares too.
/positivereviewover
>>
Yeah metro was fun but I never ran out of air filters, some choking moments but that was more funny then scary.

The monsters were LoL. I did enjoy the weird plot, and the hidden ending.

Parts of Diablo 1 are pretty creepy, if you're playing by yourself. Especially when you get to the catacombs part where it's dark as fuck, and the caves. I still play D1 every couple years.

Amnesia: The Dark Decent was scary.
Also, idk if u can get for pc, but Fatal Frame 2 was really scary, think we played it on ps2 at the time, would have to take breaks, my friend got nightmares from it he said, pretty intense, haha. Never played it, but i'm sure the first Fatal Frame is probably spooky too. Can you get Decay on PC? they were like indie 360 games, had some spoops, and interesting puzzles. Resident Evil 4, classic spoops. I feel like we used to play alot of scary games, i'm gonna ask my friend if he remembers any of them

Was playing through the game with 2 friends and this level was something else. The atmosphere and tension in this level was remarkable. Years later I read that many people felt the same and it is considered one of the scariest levels in history.

Fatal Frame 1 is less spooky and quite unmemorable game really. They got it right in FF2. Also FF3 is awesome, it's like an improved version of FF2 and there are levels where you are in a modern Japanese house and it makes you feel exactly like you're in Ju-On. Fuckin love this game. Gutted that I'll never play FF4, fuckers only released it in Japan. I heard there's a fan made translated version but fuck if I'm going to search for it.

>Resident Evil 4, classic spoops

you know, back in 1998 Resident Evil 1 and 2 were pretty darn spoopy (Zombies were still moderately scary back then because they hadn't been done to death yet). The beginning of RE2 before you make it to the police station where you start out surrounded, gradually run out of bullets because there's nowhere near enough, and finally limp your way into the police station — and then its full of dead guys and fuckin' pic related. The unkillable, mutating g virus boss thing was pretty scary too, at least when I was ten

I really liked F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault & Recon). Hell of a twist at the end, and it's use of sound effects was masterful. It will train you to expect creepy shit with certain sounds, then uses that to fuck with you, like hearing the sound effect and seeing nothing, and when you're like "WTF, was I turned the wrong way and miss it or something?", you let your guard down, turn a corner and BAM! I loved it.

F.E.A.R. 2 was the best one in my opinion, had even more creepyness as well as action, and kept the two balanced well like the first one.

F.3.A.R. kinda sucked by comparison, less creep factor in exchange for jump scares, gore, and more action. It isn't total shit, though, and would recommend playing it if you liked the first 2 if not for the sake of completion and knowing how the story ends.

Tomb raider 3.

Tutorial mission.

You're in a mansion. Somewhere there is a creepy butler with a tray who will follow you. You can hear the clanking of his butler tray; it is your only warning of his approach. It is the sound of terror, and upon sight you will hear his old man moans. He gasps, wheezes, rattles his tray, and then croaks something unintelligible at you. His small, beady, demonic eyes are always on you. You can lock him in the freezer, but sometimes he gets out. He's always hunting you. Always following you. If you stay still for too long, you will hear that dreadful clanking of his tray.

The butler cometh.

... Seriously it creeped the crap out of me.
>>
Any horror game that gives you the ability to kill the creatures is not fucking scary at all. How does feeling invincible make you afraid?

You don't feel exposed. You don't feel vulnerable or hopelessness. You have power and intelligence over the creature, so what's to fear? The way it looks?

Maybe it's just me, but those games do nothing fo rme

fatal frame scared me for this reason. you can weaken and sometimes take out the ghosts with the camera - but you're still wandering around with a camera and i found that premise to be frightening, i also liked that even the item screen wasn't safe from spoops
>>
>>17363127
It's not scary at all if you can only run away from the monsters. In outlast you stop caring about the monsters eventually because you can out run them. Even if they hit you, you will recover fast.

In alien isolation you stop giving a shit about dying because you die all the time.
>>
>>17361421
This
I didnt expect much of it but goddamn it was really good.
>>
>>17363415
True you can out run enemies, but if you couldn't, then enemies in the game would be too hard.

Imagine if every single time a monster saw you, it basically meant death. it would get frustrating quick

SOMA had it setup to where you're in a maze every time you encounter a creature, so trying to outrun them usually meant running into a dead end and being fucked. Actually running away is probably the worst thing you could do, so you had to crawl and hide somewhere, and hope that it didn't move too close or it'd kill you.

>>17363438

Either of the two extremes totally sap the tension out of the game. I found amnesia to be totally dull and boring once I discovered there was literally nothing I could do to defend myself against the monsters.

Get some scary music and some shuffling? Go run and hide until it stops. Ad infinitum.

That's why games that allow you to fight the monsters, but make the fights challenging and unpredictable, are always the scariest.

Those moments where you are deciding, fight or flight, and knowing that either option isn't going to be easy, are what really gets the heart pumping. It's really a shame that so many modern 'horror' games fundamentally fail to understand this.
>>
>>17363127

David's Firth's performance in this game (he plays two characters) is mortifying.

I dunno, I think FF1 is a lot more spooky than 2, you can tell that scares were their primary target while in 2 the story was definitely the central draw though.

100% agree about 3 though, the best of the franchise imo. It has this unique and fantastic atmosphere, cold/tranquil/claustrophobic/isolated/dreamy/disorientating/oppressive all in one, it's really amazing- legitimately my favourite game of all time. Just one of those games that clicked perfectly with me. I really wish it got more attention in gaming media, because I seriously think it's a "games-as-art" contender on the level of like Silent Hill 2.

4 was as good as 1 and 2 imo. A lot less scary, but its art direction is fantastic and the story very interesting, if riddled with plotholes. That doesn't sound very good, but I feel its ones of those games where it's more than the sum of its parts.

I played a lot of scary flash games back in the day. Really enjoyed them. I remember a few point and clicks on Kongregate before the Gamestop acquisition. One where you were in jail and a huge monster appeared, another thatvwas like a haunted house (SUPER scripted) and I feel like I'm forgetting one... I don't enjoy playing video games in the horror genre, but I generally enjoy reading the plots and watching others play. The Screecher is a Don't Starve mod released by the devs, and that has had me spooked to go anywhere near the woods at night for a while. It's full of jump scares, but it's a fun experience.

Old Doom games are a far cry from horror. Doom 3 was just jump scare: the game.

Everything moves so slow in that level though, there's only a few moments where you can stop running and just die.

Valve put way too many safety nets in that level, just crawl under a spinning blade or hide behind a fire until everything chasing you dies.
>>
>>17361402
Actually I would argue that Metro 1 was much more spoopy. The atmosphere made you feel dread and hopeless. Not to mention the ghost parts. Both games were masterpieces but the second one lost luster because humanity seemed to have found some hope in survival by the beginning of Last Light. Kind of kills the terrors of the Metro if you're armed to the teeth.

Tl;dr ahead

>half life games
Not really spoopy as the other ones, but it had its moments, the ambient sounds from the later games were always so creepy like all the other odd shit with the gman and combine advisors
>fear series
Pretty messy schooter, blood everywhere, some memorable scares, fun games overall
>call of cthulhu
Good grim atmosphere, the sanity meter adds to the uneasy feeling you get when playing it. The hotel escape in the beginning was intense. A good example of a game that doesnt let you gun your way through the enemies as easily as any cod would.
>stalker games

Plebs for not mentioning a game that isn't remotely scary due to its unbelievably repetitive nature. They relied completely on jump scares. They lose fear value after 3 in a row. Basically a walking simulator of someone who has a 4 year old who jumps out to scare you all the time. They might get you a few times but then you know little Tommy is gonna be around on of those corners. I'd give it a 2/10. 2 being the amount of times it scared me.
>>
>>17373902
I wouldn't even call it fear, it's just being startled. Layers of Fear has moments where you want you don't actually want to go into certain rooms or turn around at times because you've heard something and are actually afraid to find out the source of it.

Protip: don't turn around

well said outlast was shit
was spooped by atmosphere and treaded very cautiously for probably 30 minutes then realized every single time you see a locker or beds or a vent, someone is going to chase you soon.
i hate that that is literally the only thing you can do to circumvent hostiles. where is the scare when i 100% know i just need to return to the nearest locker i saw a few rooms back, jump in one, then watch the thing chasing me open every locker except the one i'm in.

also remember that doctor part being lame as hell because it was inevitably trial and error, as you had to go in and out of rooms at the right times etc to avoid him, it was a complicated area to navigate with a lot of rooms/doors and only one correct way out. so after the 5th time he catches you and kills you, it's not so scary anymore you just want to get through this bs
>>

This.

I mean, the murder mystery stuff was a tad obvious to me, but when you realize there's a supernatural twist to everything it makes about 90 percent of everything that happened earlier a bit more frightening when you go through it in your head.

There were little things that made my buddy and I nervous throughout the game

>when exploring the house as Sam while everyone barely is walking into the house one of the upper level doors leading outside is already open and unlocked

After you kill Angel and Roland dies. when you're at the mining place and you're about to turn on the first pump for that mission to overflow the pipe. a face of an eyeless angel oozing/spitting slag or eriduim or whatever would pop up screaming "No daddy No daddy" and end.

Think most people on /x/ would appreciate D. My brother bought this for me on Sega Saturn back then and at the time it was the spookiest, most realistic thing I'd ever experienced. It's still top level story telling in the games medium.

This is a Kenji Eno game (rest his soul), the guy who packed in condoms with one of his games and developed another game for fucking blind people. The sequel for Dreamcast and the digital actress Laura's other starring role Enemy Zero are both worthwhile too but the original D is where my love of horror games probably started.

That said I'm a huge Team Silent fan and probably the scariest game in recent memory is Penumbra which thankfully blew up once Amnesia came out. Oh and laugh if you want but Escapee Go! on Nintendo DS fucked with me too.

Need to play DreadOut some more as well as Evil Within (that fucking giant Sadako monster spidering all over me after I thought I thought i finally burned her to death gave me the nopes...)

My headcannon said that a lot of the shit Clarke saw weren't straight up monsters, but that being infected by the beacon made people see other people infected by the beacon as monsters so they were all just killing each other in a beacon fueled frenzy of fear and hallucinations.

Not to say some weren't monsters, just that the more humanoid ones might not have been what they seemed.

This isn't exactly about vidya that's scary.
Or about being scared, since I'm not scared about this.
But you might be spooked.

When I was an inmature teen, there was three times I bought videogames that were new, and that I had no clue if they were good at all. They were all for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis for murricans). Other games that I picked "randomly" are disqualified, as they were picked for other reasons, for example: picked by a friend, so they really weren't random picked by me.

So here's the list of the games:

-Light Crusader.
-Gunstar Heroes.
-Dynamite Headdy.

Notice anything?
Anything at all?
Some kind of pattern?
I assure you I'm not making this up.
Yes, pic related, yes.
Without knowing 'em
And yes, I'm aware they are rather unique games from an unique developer.
No, I never saw them on mags, I hadn't much money back then, too young.

I purchased 3 random games I never knew about for myself (only other games I ever purchased unknowningly were purchased by frinds).

All 3 of them were developed by Treasure.
Treasure only had 5 Mega Drive/Genesis games.

They also happen to be some of my favourite mega drive games, I have other favourites, but it's quite spoopy that 3 randomly picked games ended up being of the same dev, and ending up faves.

It's true, google it, they're all treasure games.

Not just for horror games, it's a terrible trope in general. They teach 8 year old children to never use 'it was all a dream' to finish a story and yet adults still do it.

However I've yet to see a game go all 'Nah bro your character was just psychotic and having vivid auditory and visual hallucinations'
