Is there anything special I'd need to know about making my own tarot cards?

The only thing you have to do is to know what each card means. Each one have a significant meaning and is so complex that there's actually a self-evolution road set by the tarot cards.
Of course you can just draw what you want for each card and there are a lot of tarots made that way. And all of them really sucks.
What can I advise you to do is to see the Crowley's tarot deck. For me that's the most heavy in symbology of them all. You can get a good idea of what to put in your own tarot deck if your insight is sharp and you can see the symbols in Crowley's art.
If you want it to be a TAROT deck, youll want to stick to the general themes and images present in standard tarot, they are there for a reason and you should understand them so you can use them in your own imagery.
If your question is really about making your own cartomancy card system, then no, use whatever symbolism you like as long as it works.
Besides Aleister Crowley is the father of the modern occultism!
Don't forget to leave them out on a full moon.

I have a custom made Tarot Deck hand drawn by a friend of mine 30 years ago.
If you want to do this you better know everything there is to know about each card you're drawing.
But in general, theres nothing to stop you from doing so.
