Man, this shit happened at the height of the USSR's cover ups. Just look at Valentin Bondarenko (original Vostok-1 cosmonaut), Soyuz-11 and the Nedelin catastrophe. Who knows what really happened to these hikers.

That whole general area was a Soviet military test site in the 50's not to hard to figure out what happened and why they covered it up.
