The Western Tradition is a mess mate. It's a skeleton with some few chunks of meat left, while Eastern traditions are more wholesome. Due to this, the East has a better climate for producing adepts, while the West is mostly busy treasure hunting and trimming weeds.
The Chakras is just one approach to activate the energy body - for example, Daoists works with the Dantiens and Buddhists works with the Winds. Besides, the traditional yogic understanding of the Chakras and the New Age interpretation is radically different.
Personally, I dont care much for the form of the teachings, whether they be from this or that culture, but more on the content. And the East quite simply has a better selection, IMO.

What Plato did, is that he refined the teachings of the "barbarians" to suit the Greek intellect.
