I looked into that and it's hard to find anything about the massive lawsuit (the official name is apparently Abeel vs Bank of America). There are no news articles about it, just some scattered blog posts.
Spire Law Group itself seems incredibly dodgy, they apparently misatributed a quote to Niel Barofsky, who headed TARP during the financial crisis. They were also a no-name law group with a huge case that had no chance of being considered, let alone winning, and I found a few posts claiming it's a scam since it was asking homeowners who were screwed by the housing debacle for thousands of dollars.
CNBC was just reproducing Spire's press statement, I assume it got shut down because it was essentially advertising a scam. The CNBC executive's family murder seems like coincidence.

Seems like a coincidence, even if it was law enforcement or the government who told CNBC to take down the article, why would they need to kill an executive who wouldn't be personally involved in such low-level work?

Hard to say, but the law suit doesn't look legit from what I've read. The law firm was calling for people involved in the housing scandal to give them thousands of dollars to be involved and get compensation from the government in the case of a win. Since the suit had zero chance of succeeding, that sounds like a scam to me.
The near-zero amount of reporting on it is odd, my hunch is that a law enforcement agency and/or the government didn't want to give the scam publicity so other people wouldn't copy it.
