>99942 Apophis (/əˈpɒfJs/, previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a probability of up to 2.7% that it would hit Earth on April 13, 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However, a possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole, a small region no more than about 800 m (~0.5 mi) wide,[8] that would set up a future impact exactly seven years later, on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept it at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006, when the probability that Apophis would pass through the keyhole was determined to be very small.

>Preliminary observations by Goldstone radar in January 2013 effectively ruled out the possibility of an Earth impact by Apophis in 2036.[10] By May 6, 2013 (April 15, 2013 observation arc), the probability of an impact on April 13, 2036 had been eliminated.[3] As of October 8, 2014, using observations through February 26, 2014, the odds of an impact on April 12, 2068, as calculated by the JPL Sentry risk table is (1 in 149,000).[3]

>APHOPIS ASTEROID

Why would anyone give such a menacing name for a fucking asteroid?
>>
ill be old or dead and my kids wil be grown into probably loosers so who care!!

alright there is still enough left for us to get rid of this shit, maybe the thing will just wander off somewhere, we might even blow it up, another thing we don't even know where it is gonna land if it falls in the middle of the ocean, who gives a shit then.

Wasn't there a thread a few days ago where some guy was freaking out that the government formed an asteroid defense office?

I ain't concerned. 2068 is 50 years from now. Worst case scenario we do it futurama style and just sling a really heavy object at it with a shit load of rockets to knock it off course :/
>>

I don't like these odds.

>blow it up
Great, now you've got tens of thousands of small asteroids heading towards the atmosphere
>if it falls in the middle of the ocean, who gives a shit
Tsunamis bigger than anything your puny teenage mind can fathom, earthquakes that could result in volcanic activity, which means that if it hits close enough to 'muricas west coast, it could trigger yellowstone and blow up most of the fucking continent.

this would at best flatten 1000sq miles, maybe destroy a state in the us or a small country, it would not be a global mass extinction event, you need one 2km for that

Meh, who cares? Its just going to hit russia or central america if it does hit.
>>
>>17228209
I think you fail to realize the significant force these monsters produce.

While the Aphopis Asteriod is no where near the size of the Chicxulub meter (meter which hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula wiping out life), the acceleration of these rocks hitting the ocean would yield impressive results.

Talking about large, mile high tsunamis and tidal waves killing thousands of people.
>>
>>17230092
another factor is what the rock is made out of. super heavy elements would deal more damage compared to "softer" material simply because it would stay intact coming into the atmosphere
>>
>>17223496
2036?
I think if we already know about it, and it is a real threat, then something will be done about it.
We could send out landers with rocket boosters and steer it away.
Hell, if it's far enough away, we could just nuke it and probably now worry about debris.
>>
>>17230092
>Talking about large, mile high tsunamis and tidal waves killing thousands of people
the tsunami that hit years ago was no where near that size and killed hundreds of thousands..of course most were living on islands and huts but you get the measurement

if an asteroid was to hit earth, i think it would come out of nowhere, or would be kept secret to avoid panic. only essential teams would work to stop it, and if they failed, we wouldnt know. it would just just hit with no warning. watch for the disappearance of many powerful / rich public figures and other people in important roles a few days in advance.
