have you ever heard of a sort of "ritual" where one goes light a fire in a quiet place on a moonless night, meditate for an hour-hour and a half, and look at the shadows to build his sense of self to differentiate between what he is and what he's not?

Because I've heard of it and would like to know if it's something known, how it's called, and how best to perform the ritual.
