Mental hospital horror stories kind of piss me off. Most people who live in them are there because their disability prevents them from living on their own, NOT because they're violent criminals. Aside from being kind of insensitive, it's just not scary, because it relies on the reader being afraid of mentally ill people (which I'm not).
I think the ward's employees have more horror potential than the patients; they're in a position of absolute power, and that's been abused with terrifying consequences many times over.

I worked at a mental hospital for a time, and had to sign a non-d0sclosure aggrement when I started.
There were 5 wings each with progressively worse symptoms of peple, connected by tunnels and I worked laundry. They sent out different people to collect laundry from different wings and because I was new I got sent to the 5th wing, where the sickest people were.
I only ever had to come in to the waiting front area, but eve nthere there were people heavily contorted like out of a horror movie crawling around on the floor. All the fols I saw had diapers, and non of them could even speak.
