Lol at Troll Hunter.

I keep hearing a lot about Lake Mungo. Worth checking out for sure?
>>
>>17194546
>Lol at Troll Hunter.
Why? It's really great, loads of dark comedy, too. The designs for the trolls are also neat.
>>
>>17194558
Troll Hunter is a great movie but I wouldn't call it horror. Heck, imdb has it listed under Comedy, Drama, and Fantasy
>>
>>17194543
hell yeah those are both excellent films. if i never saw lake mungo i'd say trollhunter is my favorite
>>17194546
lake mungo is goddamn incredible. though i guess every horror is a hit or miss depending on what tickles you

but goddamn it rocked my world
>>
>>17194575
It's a horror comedy in the vein of The Evil Dead, except, to me, funnier.
>>
>>17194546
I actually watched Lake Mungo for the first time last night. Total meh for me.

The Exorcist, no movie from Hollywood can tops this.
Honorable mention: The Others, Sixth sense, The Shining
why? because Exorcist is the only movie which got the demon's characterization behavior rightly, just like what Bible & Quran described it.
Trust me, many of my close relatives are possessed by the devil/ satan/ spirit/ demon, or whatever you called it.
Horror movie from US are complete shit, generally.
I'm little bit surprised by this because US has lot of good Mystery + Thriller movies.

Here's my recommendation if you're into Ghost Horror movie:
>Coming Soon (Thai.)
>Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi (Japs. It's yearly show and It's hard to get the sub)
>Noroi (Japs)
>Buppah Rahtree (Thai)
>Whispering Corridors / Wishing Stairs (Korea)
>Any twins-related horror movie from asia
>>
>>17195266
>Horror movie from US are complete shit, generally.

maybe hollywood. plenty of great horror movies from US otherwise
>>
>>17195266
>Trust me, many of my close relatives are possessed by the devil/ satan/ spirit/ demon, or whatever you called it.

Opinion discarded.
>>
>>17195266
>Trust me, many of my close relatives are possessed by the devil/ satan/ spirit/ demon, or whatever you called it.
It was going well until that part, your opinion went to shit right there. Also it seems you have a serious nostalgia case, Exorcist/Others/Sixth/Shining are great but by now there are others that becamse classic too.
>>
I really enjoyed The Descent

But Tucker and Dale VS Evil is even better
>>
>>17195331

>Trust me, many of my close relatives are possessed by the devil/ satan/ spirit/ demon, or whatever you called it.
Well, i thought it was /x/ not /sci/, mate.
Also, i'm not gonna force my belief on you, because probably we have different culture in real life.

>Exorcist/Others/Sixth/Shining are great but by now there are others that becamse classic too.
Can you name it for me, anon? But please, not the horror slasher, just the ghost-related one.
>>

>>
>>17198621
the only dreading and creepy thing about the babadook was not knowing when that fucking kid was going to start screaming and being a little shit again, plus the actual monster seemed friendly and liked eating worms, can't get any cuter than that
>>
>>17198621
PG-13 horror is always shit. Even without gore or explicit violence, if it's scary enough it'll be too intense for 13-year-olds.
Also, if something is rated PG-13, odds are that it's a piece of shit because they had to give it the hardest rating they could without limiting who can buy tickets.

>>
>Jaws
Bases itself in reality more than most horror movies. Watch that shit before you go to the beach.
>The Shining
My appreciation for this on has grown over the years. I like it more for how beautifully it was shot than how scary it was. Watched "Room 237" the other day and it opened me up to new things in the film.
>Insidious
Favorite "modern horror". Loved the atmosphere it created.

Banshee Chapter. Anyone else seen it? It was a hell of a ride and stuck with me for a long time after. Best watched in the dark. Got pretty spooked, won't lie.

That was really the only movie/scene that unnerved me. Not scared. But more like it just got under my skin.

I think it worked so well because it wasn't "in your face" blunt horror. It was the slow creeping type that works its way into you.
>>
>>17199330
I wouldn't call The Ninth Gate horror. More like a mystery thriller. It had certain horror elements and themes but in no way was it actually a horror film.

It Follows might not have been a masterpiece, but it's definitely a recent favorite of mine. What it lacks in objective quality it makes up for just by being different in its execution. Certainly the only horror movie I can think of with a notably great soundtrack.

Also, it's not really horror by anyone's definition, but does anyone else really like Cabin in the Woods's horror movie meta? I thought it was pretty clever up until it tried to be serious right at the end, though its serious bit still had a creative concept to it. I just liked the really strong scp vibes it gave off.

Black Christmas is my favorite horror movie that genuinely scares me. Every phone call scene still scares me no matter how many times I watch it, every death scene, the fact that you know the killer is in the house with the girls the whole time, every scene of him screaming and babbling to himself, that fucking eye scene, always always scares me every time. It's such a great movie that not a lot of people know about, that is just made right.

My other favorite is Rosemary's Baby, which is also one of favorite movies. I know not a lot of people find it frightening, but it must be a personal thing, because it does creep me out. Just the idea of everyone around you being in on something about you that you don't know about, the helplessness, power and control being taken away from you, having no one to turn to, all things that are personally very frightening to me.

And pretty much any of Cronenbergs body horror stuff, your body is the monster and it is turning against you.

Well, according to my IMDb ratings, my favorite horror movie is Nosferatu (1922), which I gave a 9.
This is my highest rated horror movie.
After that, I have rated with 8 the following movies:
Tetsuo (1989)
Call of Cthulhu (2005)
Onibaba (1964)
Les Diaboliques (1955)
Braindead (1992)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Repulsion (1965)
Psycho (1960)
The Exorcist (1973)

The rest get 7 or less.
Horror movies are my second lowest rated genre after Family movies, with a 5.5 average rating of 519 movies listed as Horror on IMDb.

no. stop.

hey guys. you know, it's really depressing that some of you are giving recommendations for movies that are really shit.
>>
>>17218341
So what do you recommend?
>>
>>17218341
please recommend some then. Good recent hooror movies are getting harder and harder to find.

>inb4 shit like sinister

and please no shitty jumpscares
>>
>>17214034
Yeah, The Ring. That movie spooked the shit out of me. A friend and I rented it in high school a few years after it came out. The hype around it had died down and we knew next to nothing about it. We just heard that it was "pretty spoopy" from people we knew. Decided to give it a spin late one night, and bricks were shat. Slept very poorly for the next few days, and I kid you not, I kept encountering staticky televisions all over the place in the seven days after watching it. At school, at home...

Was more convinced than I want to admit that Samara was going to materialize in my house and kill me.

The fright I got from The Ring is what got me watching horror films as a major hobby. I wanted to find other films that could do that same thing to me. I've watched hundreds over the years since then, and only a few have gotten close to scaring me so badly. It's just a damn good film, from its source material, concept, cinematography and score.
>>
>>17218472
Not trying to be "that guy", but Sinister was pretty good. The concept was great.
I really wish the ending had been better, and that they'd spent more time building up the mythology in the film, but it was pretty enjoyable overall, IMO. Awesome soundtrack, too.

Sinister 2, though? Fucking awful. I left the theater wanting to punch the director in the dick. Repeatedly.
>>
>>17218489
well I said shit but desu it was not that bad. Just I didn't like the way it was filmed, too much of those shitty and cheap jumpscares and I couldn't take this seriously because the bad guy looked like a Slipknot member... but the concept and the super 8 found footage were quite good. Didn't watched the other ones yet, will do for the record and expect to laugh.
>>
>>17218489
I'm sorry, my friend, but you couldn't be more wrong. Sinister was a terrible movie by any objective account of story telling.

There was no basis for any of it. There was no motive for the villain; its nature and purpose are never revealed. There's no point to the apparent clues, the timing and house tracking and all of that, never any actual design to them. Why the kids all turned on their families? No explanation for that. That's even before we get to the parts like how a fucking kid under the age of ten hauled full adult bodies up hanging from a tree branch.

In the end, if you strip away all the holes in the story, it's just a string of stupid, over the top "snuff" films peppered with a handful of rather gaudy spooky ghost children effects. Simply awful.
>>
>>17218519
I understand what you mean, and even agree with a lot of those criticisms. I really appreciated the atmosphere, though, and felt that it was pretty well-acted. I love me a good "eater of children" from mythology, but I disliked the ghost kids and the lack of background given to the villain.

I liked a lot of things about the film, even if it had a lot of flaws. It was a fun and spooky experience for me, even if it didn't deliver as a complete film.

And that soundtrack, like I said. Hmmgh

1. The Ring

5. Silent Hill
6. Let the Right One In

9. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
10. The Last Exorcism
11. Drag Me to Hell
12. Trick 'r Treat
13. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
>>

I actually thought that Drag me to Hell was shit the first time I watched it (this was a few years ago) but once I realised Sam Raimi meant it as a semi spoof I ended up enjoying it a lot more.
>>
>>17218519
The film would've been so much better without the le 2spooky Slipknot reject villain.

The snuff film stuff alone was fucking unnerving as shit.

A Field In England is one of my favourite films. Kill List is fucking great and scary, too. Ben Wheatley rules.
Also I am a huge fan of The Thing, Blair Witch Project, The Shining and a wicked little indie film called Resolution is hella scary.
I'll probably get shit for this but I think VHS-Viral is the best (and most disturbing) in the series.
>>17213293
Wicked film, seen it loads but still scary. Not keen on the Hunter S. Thompson expy, I love that actor, though.
>>17214452
Fuck, how could I forget about Onibaba?!?! fantastic film. Also the original Les Yeux Sans Visage is scary as shit (haven't seen the remake with Antonio Banderas).

I rate Borderlands really highly, too.

Definitely Lake Mungo. I have honestly never been scared by a movie before. It really goes beyond jump scares and deals with innate fears we all have, deep down. I slept with the lights on for a week.

No love for The Hills Have Eyes 2006? Absolutely loved it. The intro is also one of my favorites of all time, with the Webb Pierce song behind the nuclear explosion footage and disfigured kids it just all wraps up into a great vibe. Not to mention the opening kill is wonderful (pickaxe).

To me the most impressive thing about The Exorcist is the sound effects (which I believe it won an academy award for). I saw the re release in theaters as a teen and it left an impression on me I will never forget. I believe you wouldn't get the proper affect of the sound by watching it on a laptop or phone or even a tv with shitty sound. If you watch this film watch it on a setup with a decent sound system turned up somewhat loud for the proper effect.

Was thinking of watching Silent Hill. Never played the games, but really liked the concept. Watching the trailer, though, it looks more campy than scary.

Is it actually unnerving, this film? If so, I might give it a shot.

>>17221625
The only V/H/S movie worth watching is the first one. They got progressively worse as they went, and the third one was almost too shitty to watch. Really liked the first one, though.

Wish there were more good horror anthology films out there.
>>
>>17221632
2 was pretty awesome.

I just liked the genuine feel of the first. Especially the last one with the haunted house.
>>
>>17221617
It depends on the person how unnerving you will find it, I guess. Due to the nature of the whole Silent Hill franchise, the actual horror is mostly metaphorical/psychological, so if you're not easily scared by that kind of stuff, the movie might not scare you all that much. Either way, I think it's a really good movie and I wouldn't call it campy.

Just got back from watching this.

Boring honestly. Had one genuine scare and that was the phone part. Apart from that it was extremely meh.

And the resolution to the overall mystery didn't feel like a resolution at all. It felt like "oh shit we are running out of money. We better wrap this up and claim this was what the ghost wanted all along."

Being boring was its biggest sin.

Is the mouth of madness actually good? Or is it another overrated film?

I adore cosmic and existential horror and I want a good film to watch.
>>
>>17222153
It's definitely enjoyable, especially when watched as a part of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy;
The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In the mouth of Madness
>>
>>17202900
The earlier parts of Insidious were definitely the best bits of modern, mainstream horror in a long time, but it just made the shit in the last quarter or so even more disappointing.
>>
>>17222820
Just finished it.

In my opinion the best parts of the movie are after he gets back to civilisation.

Oh yeah, spoilers for mouth of madness.
I thought that the town and stuff in there was too goofy to be scary. Honestly they shouldn't have shown the monsters and there were parts where it was more laughable than scary.

When he gets back? Brilliant. I wish the whole movie was like that. You can feel the inescapable doom and dread as he know the human race is doomed and they are destined to go extinct. Plus everything with him walking out of the institution was great.

Just my opinion.
>>
>>17222966
>Honestly they shouldn't have shown the monsters and there were parts where it was more laughable than scary.

Maybe that was the point. Its madness, after all.
>>
>>17199157
I don't understand why you faggots hated the Babadook. The monster was nonexistent. Literally the entire movie was meant to explore Jungian psychology, not any kind of monster or supernatural spooks. The Babadook was just the mother's Jungian shadow.
>>
>>17223509
Also, the monster being fed worms was just meant so show that the only way to really deal with your Jungian shadow is to acknowledge its existence and give it just enough nourishment to keep it from taking over. No idea why it had to be worms, but w/e
The whole "Shh it's fine you're okay" or whatever the fuck she said to it was mean to show the same thing. That it would listen to you if you were good to it.

Are you me. You echoed my experiences trying to show my friends Noroi. I felt like they need instant gratification. Without trying to sound like too much of a horror elitist, I felt Noroi was too sophisticated for their tastes.

It was kinda an anoraks film, it was full of little little details that filled the film with this lore and that in turn added flavour to the horror.

The Conjuring was horseshit. Saw it in theaters and was really fucking disappointed. Watched it again when it came out on DVD and it still sucked dick. I don't understand what all the hype was about.
