I'm a diver so I see sting rays and shit all the time and have close encounters constantly. To me there's no worse feeling than when you are in only 2 meter deep water but the sea weed is growing right up to your face and the visibility is 30 center meters. You literally have no idea what's in front of you and you have no idea what's below you. I just swim through that area with my knife drawn and as quick as possible.

There are small crustaceans (copepods iirc) who have the ability to create bioluminescent glowing clouds when threatened to distract predators (kinda like squids use ink clouds).
