Assuming they're real, I've had a sneaking suspicion as to why we don't see these little bastards much anymore. Centuries ago, people feared them and left offerings to them. In 2015 most people would attempt to kill them, fuck them and exploit them for money. Not necessarily in that order.

Aren't these creatures supposed to be European in nature? I've always wondered how come they seem to show up in South America/Latin America so much. At least the recorded sightings of them do. How come there aren't many sightings in North America or Europe? The folk lore itself involving Gnomes and Fairies are Celtic and Germanic respectively. And the older written accounts of encounters with these beings seem to surround Britain, Ireland, France and parts of Germany.
