To make a horocrux you need first to kill someone, that wa your soul would be splited. You take a piece of your soul and you place it in any object you like, that think is meaninful to you. Maybe a diary, the ring of your late mother, a snake you own, so that way if your physical body is attacked your soul would be protected.

Lots of fantasy books and games rip off of old-time religions and myths. Then they add some of their own made-up stuff to make a story. How much is added depends on the book/movie/game in question.
The biggest problem with Harry Potter that I've seen is that it makes all of this shit look super-easy, "just learn it in high school and suddenly you're a top expert." That's bullshit even with the most mundane of subjects, and a million times so with anything that could be called magic.
