If I can scan a newspaper article here at my local archive in the library I'll be able to show you guys a supposed sighting of them here in the Boise Foothills just right before you enter the Idaho National Forest.
Back in like the 1970's a bunch of backpackers were stopped in their truck looking over a vast gorge with their binoculars and claimed they saw what looked like a bunch of dogs that looked like mastiffs that "probably escaped from a shelter" or something. Weird thing was is that that they kept standing on their hind legs sort of like how a prairie dog wood, facing the backpacker's truck. Eventually the backpackers just went on their way dismissing the citing as coyotes despite the size being far too large and appearance being completely off for a coyote.
Similar sightings were reported up around a place called boulder lake up around McCall, Idaho.

A lot of people differ on the beginings. As a Michiganfag, I wanna say that Michigan/Wisconsin was were the dogman legend originated. "Back in the day" from European colonists, natives, to modern day, the dogman was a very common reported cryptid, basically the midwest's bigfoot. A few hundred years later in Traverse City, Michigan, a local radio did an april fool's joke reporting on the dogman, including a song written by some of the people working there. The problem was, people in the city had actually SEEN the dogman, and they station got swarmed with calls, and that's how dogman got recognition, at least out side of the midwest. There is also the Beast of Bray Road in Wisconsin, which is a dogman like creature with actual evidence of it's existence spotted around the same time.
