Hey /x/ I was wondering on your opinion of Lovecraft and the terrifying question. Is it really fiction?

The part where we are controlled by a series of incomprehensibly powerful, and advanced inter-dimensional beings. In conflict with each other in some way or another for spheres of influence. But even this is superficial in light of rest, I prefer to take a spoonful with a lot of skepticism.

Instead of savages in the dark Continent its like what >>17104251 said. Entities beyond comprehension, both sublime and horrible are a thing. Imagine a tentacle of inky blackness reaching out of the abyss into the minds of ppl all over the world.

In Lovecraft's fiction nobody is controlled by these beings. They exist, we do. And the point is that they're so big and powerful we're nothing to them. Some might get their kicks trolling mankind (Nyarlathotep, for instance), but generally speaking they don't even care about us enough to controll us. We're nothing. We will go extinct at one point and they won't even notice. That's the point Lovecraft wanted to get across: all this "we humans are the shit, look at our civilizations and history and art, look how great we are" is just megalomaniacal bullshit. Our eiffel tower or great pyramids have as much value as that ant mound you stepped on as a kid.
>>
>>17104251
this is true,
but its humans, fighting against these beings, that have the real power.
>>
>>17105581

When this finally sinks in you realize life is entirely pointless and we really do nothing of value that anyone will really care about in a million years.

I get that feeling, just like Lovecraft did, by looking into the sky at night either simply whilst smoking my tobacco pipe on the deck or looking through my telescope.

We're painfully insignificant.

hey come reply to one of these.
all i need is a "hey i think you have a point"
>>
>>17105662
>We're painfully insignificant.
Sure, but Lovecraft went further. We're fucked and blissfully unaware of it. That the universe is not merely vast and uncaring, but also that it contains huge scary things that our little mammal brains aren't capable of conceptualizing. Things that if they happen to cross our paths would annihilate us without even noticing we were underfoot.

And from what we've learned of astrophysics and theoretical physics since the 1930s, that's pretty much true. We're sitting ducks and we always have been. We could be wiped out at any time by some unusual cosmic event we aren't even aware can happen.

OPEN QUESTION:
In terms of the great old ones and the outer gods, which is most terrifying for you/humanity?
>>
>>17105662
Don't want to be that dude. But it's pretty awesome how small insignificant things like us came to comprehend and discover such extravagant and immensely large concepts as the universe. Solving mathematical puzzles and making scientific innovations. Even the fact that we have people like lovecraft to craft such works of masterpiece. It's also incredible how such beings like us can imagine such things, us, specs of dust on an insignificant rock who were fortunate enough for our bacterial ancestors to find such an insignificant rock and survive through the ages with numerous possible extintions, to evolve into us.

Trust me, anyone above 20 has been through the ringer... no matter which board they're on. You can hardly post anything from before 10 years ago without getting bitched at, unless it's some whackass millennial blog posting about shit that happened 20 years before they were born, that they know nothing about.

Well, that's not necessarily true. I guess there are a lot of MUCH older folks (60+) on /diy/ who just ignore all the fucktarded shit entirely somehow. I just can't do that, because shitposting isn't confined to specific threads. I'll be reading a great thread and then halfway through some dildo starts shitposting and fucks the thread up entirely on his own before mods can get to him (if they ever do).

I've been mostly on /his/ since I discovered it. People actually remember shit from before 5 years ago there, and they're surprisingly adjusted for 4channers.

On one hand it's one of the better arguments for deity. On the other, it means he's one of those incomprehensible entities and only seemingly benevolent because we fail to understand his intentions.
>>
>>17103849
None of it's real you dope. It was just a really fun author persona gimmick.
The truth. The ohhh so horrible truth. Is that we are alone.
There are no Old Gods.
There are not mythical cities with countless doors that lead to countless worlds.
There is no magic in the cats
There is just us: you, me and everyone here
And that is a scarier thought than any Lovecraftian horror.
what happens if you turn down a roleplayer?
im pretty sure im in a life repeating loop, and have just recognized myself in such in our reality.
in essence, this could shape all of reality as we know it, by creating a deviant timestream from causality, repeatedly, starting fresh each time i repeat the life.
>>
It's just a trick bro

That there isn't any more reason to believe Lovecraft is true than there is that Harry Potter is true. Or any fiction book for that matter.

Fuck, let's roll with the Redwall series. All true.
